(Sorry, emphasis is because some doofus in NY already used the base title...)

Has anyone seen popcorn salt on a shelf around here? My local KS, Safeway and Walmart Grocery all fail to stock it. It's about $6 on Amazon.

Anyone? Bueller?

You can make your own with kosher salt and a food processor

I'll look, but my experience is that Target's grocery section has a smaller selection than most convenience stores. Also, I am looking for plain old salt, not the various shake-on flavorings which are available everywhere.

Popcorn salt is incredibly fine, nearly like confectioner's sugar, and sticks very well to popcorn even if you don't use any kind of oil, butter or other goop. You have to learn to use a very light hand or you will get salt with some popcorn in it.

Er, could I suppose. Doubt I can get the even, fine texture of the commercial stuff.

(Raise your hand if you knew that there are about 40 or 50 kinds of salt used in food processing - all the same chemically (iodide is almost never found in cooking salts), but endless variation of powder, grain size, clumps, flakes etc. All react differently in different kinds of commercial cooking and baking.)

This.

I know people are reading this saying "popcorn salt? really?", but it's one of the keys to awesome popcorn. Another pro tip is use coconut oil.

Two of my usual Targets carry it - the one on Gartrell and the one on Briarwood - but it’s currently out of stock.
It is available at the Denver Stapleton Target, at least as per the website.

Thanks, I'll look at Target. Would not have been my first guess.

(I know of course that it can be found online. But it's about twice the price.)

I haven't found a grocery yet that doesn't carry these flavored shake ons. Not quite the same thing.
