Hi there,

I have an old couch that I would like to get rid of.

What are my options in Denver county? Should I put it out during "Large Item Pickup" days? Can I arrange for it to be donated? Should I call one of the junk remover companies?

And if you used one of the companies that come and pickup your large items for recycling what do they charge normally? If you have an idea what it would cost to remove a couch that would be much appreciated!

Put it in the alley with a "Free" sign on it.

Post it on Craigslist under the FREE category. Check out some of the ads there to see how it's done.

Also consider Freecycle.org as a way to give things away that you no longer want but wish to keep out of the landfills.

I usually put my free stuff out on Sunday afternoons. Trash day is Monday and that is when the usual people scavenge for stuff.

Also, check with the company that picks up your trash. They may pick up some stuff for a small fee.

What shape is it in? If it's decent, Habitat for Humanity will come pick it up to sell. They ask for a small (I think $15) donation to offset transportation fees but it's not required.

Or as others have said, you can try freecycle/craigslist free, etc. Anything in halfway decent shape will usually go.

Depending on where you live, sometimes you can just "kick it to the curb" when you put out the trash cans. In my experience, it was always gone before the trash truck came...

In the rare instance that it wasn't "snagged", I had to pay a small fee to have it removed.

I posted a "free double bed" one time on CL. It had belonged to my young daughter, so it had pee stains on the mattress. I gave a pair of freshly washed sheets to the very greatfull lady who came to pick it up.

I disclaimed the stains, but she said "anything beat sleeping on the floor".

Another guy who was working as a trash collector wanted a child's bike we had put out but did not have room in his truck. I offered to hold it for him and he could come back to get it (which he did).

"One man's trash is another man's treasure".
