As a teacher I can confirm that Cherry Creek is not only the best district in the area, but also among the best in the state. In fact Cherry Creek is often ranked among the best in the nation. That being said you are going to pay a premium to find a home in CCSD. Aurora has issues but while not nearly as good over all many schools in Aurora public schools are not terrible. (Just be sure to research the specific schools as some are really awful). Douglas County and Jefferson County are good districts as well.

@history nerd: We are homeschoolers. Not in the traditional way schooling the kids by ourselves but with a private teacher. Is there a big homeschooling community in Colorado, respectively in and around Denver?

I don't know too much about the homeschooling scene around here... I do happen know that homeschooling popular with the large Evangelical Christian population, but it isn't really what you describe being it's own subculture entirely. I don't know of any families with private teachers nor any colleagues who have done that type of thing.
