I say definitely go the roommate route. It'll save you a bunch of money and get you out meeting more people. Just do things pretty short term initially so if you wind up with a crazy person in your place, you can get out (or get them out) quickly.

I would agree, that's a good strategy

I know of several school teachers who do just this so that they can afford to live in the neighborhood they want to (nearby the botanical gardens)...

they basically added up the square footage of the bedrooms, and divided the rent by the bedroom square footage to come up with a "cost share ratio" that applies to household expenses (not including food - i forgot how they split this item up, but it was different)

They work all their waking hours, live off a trust fund, or they are homeless.

Or - they have a degree and plenty of work experience in a strongly in-demand field, have very little debt, and make wise financial decisions.

My house, insurance, and property taxes are 17% of net income. The property taxes will increase quite a bit soon, not just in Douglas County where I live, but throughout the metro, so that's something to keep in mind.

Or they work their butts off for awhile to get ahead and not have to do any of that.
