I'm sorry to say that we were a little freaked out by the emptiness of the street and the stares of the few people we passed. I know nothing about the rest of the neighborhood so the residential areas may have a different feel, but the business district is not a place where I would want to spend much time.
Are you guys talking about Rosenberg's at Welton and 26th? I saw that place when I went to Spangalang Brewery next to it. Was drunk out of my mind on 15%+ beer when I walked out so bagels weren't on the agenda.

I haven't had any issues the few times I've been down to Five Points, and nobody was eyeballing me. I think I'm a little more calibrated since I moved here from the Baltimore metro (lived in Baltimore City for five years). It seems to me like you'd have to go out of your way to find trouble in that neighborhood, as opposed to trouble finding you in big swaths of Baltimore.
