So we should ban anything that may hypothetically result in someone's death, whether directly or indirectly? That's poor reasoning for banning anything.

Pot sales have brought in significant tax revenue to the state and has resulted in minuscule, if any, uptick in crime (negligent or intentional).

The CDC says about 88,000 die per year from alcohol while another group shows zero deaths from MJ.

Thats quite a number hard to believe that something so dangerous can be bought in unlimited quantities. Alcoholism is a serious problem in the US in my opinion.

Mike, then why aren't we suggesting banning heart disease or cancer?

Actually, I knew someone would say this. Oh well, guess some of us "old farts" just have no need for recreational pot!
And, yes, back in the mid 70's I did smoke it a few times. In fact, my ex-wife's brother use to make bongs out of Sparklette's Water bottles (the big ones). Heck, I even remember the old nickle ($5) and dime ($10) baggies of pot that were sold. I even snuck a small pot pipe into an outdoor AC/DC-Ted Nugent Concert.
Yep, those old years of acting stupid, but definitely fun though.....at the time, that is.

Young, stupid people are not the only people who smoke pot. I know several accomplished doctors and other professionals who use pot recreationally on a regular basis. I've used it before, but I'm not a big fan. I simply don't like the way it makes me feel. Unless I'm in pain, then it's really nice.

Here are a couple of potentially marijuana-caused deaths: Teen driver charged with vehicular homicide, DUI in fatal Boulder crash - Boulder Daily Camera

I agree alcohol is far worse.

I think that it's hard to compare alcohol and marijuana side by side, for many different reasons. Short and long term health effects are very different - they affect different parts of the body, and their effects on various parts of the body are different. Causing death is only one type of harm from using any substance. Both impair judgment, but in different ways. Social acceptance and therefore use and consumption patterns are very different. The cultural insinuations when you use one or the other are very different.

I think it's just really hard to compare them side by side and make a definitive declaration that one is clearly safer/better than another.
