We will be hitting the road in two weeks, but since our kids are not coming with us and they are flying in instead, we are planning on making a road trip out of it and sight-see.
When i put directions on my phone, it gives me 3 options.. about an hour difference in each, but I truly don't know which one to pick. So I am hoping someone has some experience. Like what cities would be nice to stop at, perhaps spend the night there.
Any recommendations will be appreciated.

Thanks,

I've driven several times back and forth but never stayed more than a sleep over in any place. It is a nice drive except through Kansas which is boring and St. Louis is just broken down looking. Hopefully others can chime in here for you. I would recommend staying somewhere in TN-beautiful to drive through...

I made the drive from Boca Raton to Denver in 2003. I did it alone and took 3 days taking the northern route that you show. The drive through Tennessee was pretty. I can't remember where I stopped the first night, but I made it about 12 hours the first day, then stopped in Lawrence, Kansas the second day. It's a great college town with some good restaurants. I'd recommend the Free State Brewery if you stop there.

I used to live in Florida and have taken all three of these, and I prefer the southern route.

Capulin Volcano National Monument is nice place to kill an hour and it's right off hwy 87.

I did the drive from Tampa to Salt Lake City and then back from Salt Lake City to Tampa, our route was close to your top route. I agree that the great plains are BORING as all hell, corn for hours.. Once we made it to the kentucky/tennessee areas it got much better.

The way there, we had a penske truck and me and my wife took what equated to 3 long days (we had a break down which costed us a day, but 3 good days of actual driving)

On the way back, we drove our car and did it in 3 days (although slightly shorter days than the way there). it equated to ~34 hours in our own car, about 41 hours in the rental truck

I've driven Atlanta to Colorado a few times using your Northern route. One thing to remember is the Lawrence KS area is the last "big" place to stop and spend the night. After that hotels are rarer. If you think Western Kansas is boring, wait until you get to Eastern Colorado!

I did the top route. I was alone-well with my cat. I was driving at least 10 hours a day. I stayed at La Quintas as they were safe and had hot bfast. Once you get there check expedia for rates. You can do better than their own website.
