Leadville - dying, high altitude, mine is closing
Alma - 3 people, dead
Foreplay - pick Buena Vista instead

Are there other cities that are like Evergreen that are closer to skiing or just further in the mountain (about max 2 to 3 hours from Denver)? Thanks!
Given your criteria, Frisco or Breckenridge sound like your best bet.

Pagosa Springs would be a good match for most of the criteria of what you are looking for-- except it's twice as far from Denver as your max time (it's about 6.5 hrs drive).

There's Woodland Park, which is kind of like Colorado Springs area's version of Evergreen. No closer to skiing than Evergreen is though.

Who said the Climax mine is closing? We drive by several times a month and it is still going strong. And they are advertising dozens of jobs.

Personally I wouldn't live in Leadville. It is way too cold in the winter. FairPlay seems to be a nothing town, but maybe affordable housing for Breckinridge?
