Moving to Denver for grad school at DU in January, just wondering if anyone knew what the area around the school is like especially at night? Thanks!

Congested as heck whenever I go to the DU light rail station and there's streets are full parked cars, but the area feels unique and safe. Like it is it's own little village in the middle of the city.

My daughter lived there when she was in grad school (not at DU). Great area, safe, quiet but not *too* quiet.

I used to work right by DU at University and Evans back in 2007 and it was a place I felt safe in. However, this was before the Denver area went into a housing boom and people really started moving in, so if anything, I'd guess that's it even safer nowadays...

Actually, it has not been a good year for safety around DU. 7 rape cases were reported in the area around campus in the first four months of 2016. There was also a serial groper in late 2015/early 2016 that was never apprehended. I have not seen an update on statistics since late March. I believe all happened late at night when the victim was walking alone. I would not let these statistics dissuade me from living in the area, as it is generally safe. Use common sense safety practices and you'll be fine.

It's like most other Denver neighborhoods, except there is a more college-like feel to some of the main streets. (University and Evans)

True, if you're a chick walking alone you should be careful, but for the most part, that area is safe.

I've lived around it since the late 90s and take my kids to run around the campus quad sometimes on Friday nights. We also hit the various parks in the neighborhood a lot.

Overall it's a pretty safe area, but it is a relatively high density (for Colorado anyway) area, so you should always keep your guard up. I'm a big dude so not much scares me, but if my daughter were to live around that campus on her own, I'd be ok with it. I'd suggest the usual 'big city' stuff - that she always keep aware of her surroundings, try not to travel alone at night, stay near populated and well lit areas, carry a whistle, get familiar with the alert stations, etc...

Also, the school provides walking escorts that I would suggest be used for off hours trips around campus:

Here's their campus safety brochure:

FWIW, that area is in Denver Police District 3, sector 1, precinct 313:
