My husband and I are moving to Denver this summer. We currently live in east/southern area of the U.S. I have gotten a job at a CU Denver, and my husband is a music teacher, but currently is a stay at home dad to our 9 month old daughter. We are moving because my in-laws are moving out there, so we will have family to help with the baby. Also there will be more job opportunities for us to grow in our careers.

I have been reading this forum and others so I am well aware of the high rental prices and cost of living in the greater Denver area. We are looking for a one bedroom apartment that allows 3 cats (ugh), and 1,200 is the max that we want to pay.

Since we have the baby it would be nice if we lived somewhere "family friendly" but most important is affordability. We don't need luxurious amenities and whatnot, just don't want to live somewhere unsafe. Does anyone have any advice or recommendations? areas to look at, or areas to stay away from?

They are moving to Aurora. And I have seen plenty of 1 bedrooms for around that price.

Aurora is a huge area, and there are good and then very bad parts of the city. Do you know where your in-laws will be located?

Also, the rentals I know limit pets to 2 per unit, that might be the hardest part of your search.

Do you know where in Aurora? If your in-laws may eventually be doing child care on a daily basis, you probably don't want to be too far away from them. As others said, Aurora is huge.

You can use padmapper.com to get an idea of places that fit in your price range. Aurora is a big area, and it can be a difficult commute to DU from there.

OP is working at CU Denver, not DU.

Big question for OP is which campus? Are you working at the Anshutz Campus (Medical School) or the Auraria (downtown) campus? Parts of Aurora are a looooong way from downtown.

You might want to find something close to the light rail lines. The downtown lines stop at Auraria, and the R Line to the Med School opens this winter.

1200 is tight but not out of the question for a 1 bedroom. The cats are likely to be the biggest hurdle. Agree that you need to be in fairly close proximity to the inlaws if they are going to be childcare. If you can give some more specific guidance on where they are going to be, you may get some more specific suggestions. Alternately, if you identify some potential places and can post addresses or at least the large cross streets, people can give more feed back.

Aurora is something like 150 sq miles, and ranges from very nice to very not nice, so we really need the specifics to give any feedback that's worth anything.

A nice way of saying: ugly, dangerous, blighted.
