Well, what specific things are you looking for? There are many great communities around the Denver Metro area. Some appeal more to some than to others, so it depends on what is important to you.

Check out Castle Rock. It is a short drive to Denver (30-45min), is medium sized, and you may find a smaller town feel there. I can't think of any areas of Denver that would have a small town feel to them.
Where are you coming from and what specifically are you looking for?

We have lived in central Parker for the last 2 1/2 years and it is pretty nice here. Since there is a Wal Mart and Target Supercenter here, Parker does have the mid-size city feeling along with a "small town" feeling. However, Parker is growing fairly fast (you can tell that by all the houses that have gone up and the amount of traffic that goes down Parker Road now. Castlerock has some of the same "feelings", but is a little further away from downtown Denver (and, when driving in winter conditions, that may not be the best thing). We have been in Highlands Ranch and (in our opinion) seems to be more "upity, up" (richer folks) than live in Parker or even Castlerock.
Good luck in your search!

A "medium size city with a smalltown feel?" If you ask me, that would rule out suburbs like Highlands Ranch or Parker, which are parts of a large interconnected metro area. Not that there's anything wrong with those communities, mind you -- but they have a suburban feel, not a small town feel.

Sounds to me like you might want to consider a self-contained town like Fort Collins, about an hour north of Denver. It's a wonderful, self-contained town that doesn't feel too big or too small. Of course, that assumes that you're not trying to commute to a job in the Denver area -- that would not be advised.
