My husband's company is looking at starting a division in the Denver area. We would be moving our family (children 12,9 & 5) from the suburbs of Indianapolis. In our search we are looking to escape the rat race, houses crammed together and massive high-competition schools. Could you give advice on an area to look for that has beautiful scenery & outdoor activities almost out our doorstep, small schools that are still excellent, and more conservative values? We are flexible on location, as he would decide on office location; however he would need to be able to get to Denver within an hour. I would love to live in Boulder(from a beautiful setting perspective), but I don't think we could afford it. I would say our budget would be 400K -700K. We would like more custom homes with trees or a home on a mountainside with lots of trails and hiking right out the door step.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Maybe colorado springs? It meets a lot of your criteria. It is very close to the mountains and outdoor activities. It is more conservative in nature, and is about an hour from, but less busy and expensive than Denver. Not sure about schools though.

Boulder is socialist. Conservatives don't value the stuff you want enough to protect the lands or pay taxes enough to support the infrastructure.

Co Springs is an hour south of Denver & while the commute is an hour on a good day, there are a lot of not good days. Both weather wise & lately, the bigger issue is daily accidents that shut down things for hours. Part of that commute is only 2 lanes in each direction & is sorely in need of more (see separate topic in either COS of Colorado forum), so it's not a commute that most would want to do daily, if needing to be at work during 'normal' business hours. There also plans to expand it, so could be dealing with road construction from when they start (up in the air right now) for the following 5 years.

It is conservative here though. Opposite of Boulder. D-20 is considered the best school district in the SPrings. It is very beautiful, but not really an ideal commute.

Parker or Castle Rock might fit the bill. Conservative, decently close to recreation and closer to Denver than Colorado Springs.

1. House price are a lot here than corn country. Think 2-3x.
2. Not here. Water is expensive. Annual precipitation is 1/3 of corn country.
3. Lots of places
4. Not in the public school systems. Think private "Christian" or "Islamic" schools. Public school systems have 70K students.
5. Good.

OP, what do you mean "he would need to get to Denver within an hour". Is there a specific place in Denver that you have in mind? Downtown? The airport?

Depending on your answer to the above question, a "custom home with trees" or a home on a mountainside within an hour of Denver, together with your other criteria, may not exist in your price range.

They will be doing business in Denver, but he will be the one setting up the office so we can pick the location that we pref. So we just need to be somewhere in the general Denver area. I think I'd prefer COlorado Springs, but not sure that his company will go for that. Just trying to research areas in Denver that would work for us, as well. Does anyone know of a community called Perry Park? Someone recommended it & we've found a few homes that we like in that area. Is it commutable to Denver? Where is the bad section of 25 btwn Cos & Denver? I'm very confused on the school boundary lines in Douglas County??? Thank you so much for your advice!!

If his company has tons of money and pays big salaries then Denver would be okay. If they are concerned with the price of office space, traffic and have to keep their salaries down then they should look at the far north end of COLO SPGS in zip code 80920 or thereabouts as we suggested in your COLO SPGS thread. This zip code is about 75 minutes from parking lots at Denver airport, I know, I lived there for 11 years until last summer. If his firm and its people are conservative than COLO SPGS is a better fit.

How many people are involved in the move, or will they hire locally.

The bad section of I-25 is the entire distance from Castle Rock to Monument, an 18-mile stretch between exits 163 and 181 where it's 2 lanes each way. It will be least 4-6 years before any widening gets done there.
