I'm considering moving to denver or Alexandria, VA (and probably work in DC). I'll have no car.

We need job location, budget, etc, before we can even begin to help the OP.

I grew up in Alexandria and you can most definitely live there without a car. Between the Metro and the bus systems, it is doable. I did it for years, both when I lived in Alexandria (and other areas of NOVA) and when I lived on Capitol Hill. I can't tell you about Denver though. I just moved to CO and live way away from there.

Alexandria/DC is definitely doable without a car. I loved living in DC. I was within walking distance to the Silver Spring Metro and Takoma Park. You can't beat the public transportation. But, the two areas are completely different in almost every aspect. So, it will come down to what you want. The only real difference I found in cost of living between Denver and DC was gas. There aren't many places in the USA where you can experience such a diverse culture. You'll hear seven languages in the grocery store. Since you don't have a car DC will be way WAY easier to live in than Denver.

Yay, another DMV to Denver transplant! I grew up in Northwest and Silver Spring.

Going to need more info on what you're looking for, though.

Can you, first time poster, afford Alexandria? If you really want people to help, then come back and give more info. The two choices are totally different. Don't be a one time poster.

I never get people who get all excited about Denver without a car. Is the downtown good and traversable without a car? It's pretty decent (Alexandria is way better though just cause there's so much available off of the metro lines near there), but the whole deal about Colorado is the mountains, and good luck getting there without a car. Why would you pay Denver exorbitant prices without going to the mountains?
