Fairly new to CO. What is generally the best month to go camping in the mountains? By that I mean sunny and 70s during the day, 50s at night, low chance of rain/snow. Normally I would think the summer would be good but this summer seemed pretty rainy.

If that’s what you’re after, late August early September. The downside then is that there are typically fire bans in place if it has been dry. I’m not a fire guy, but I know that some people think they need a fire to have a good camping experience.

I like late spring because it’s more green

I wouldn't put specific months as the "best" ...

Colorado mountain camping is better described by "seasons" as you will encounter the conditions you describe in the spring, summer, and fall months. As well, you can encounter these conditions in the "winter" months, too. All very highly variable on a daily/hourly basis.

I've been snowed on in June and had 70F days in November. Rain in monsoonal patterns or no pattern at all.

Best to check area forecasts in advance of your travels and be prepared for a wide range of conditions on all of your adventures.

PS: as far as I'm concerned ... every month you can camp is a wonderful time to be in the Colorado mountains. Pick your appropriate activities and enjoy.

Yeah, no fire would be a dealbreaker. We do most of our cooking over the campfire.

February.
No one else is.
Separates the men from the boys.
Higher probability of dying.
You really don't need ALL your toes.

I'm sold, but I doubt I could get the wife on board.

I like September. Less people and I like the cool nights.

Wouldn't it be a lot more fun in May when hungry bears come out of hibernation?

Depends on where, but anywhere higher, July-August is best. June still has snow and is muddy and Sept-Oct start to get colder. Plus you want the most daylight possible. Sept-Oct are better for getting a condo cause rates are cheaper then as schools started and it'll give you a little more to do indoors while you have less daylight.

Nov-April is dumb to camp unless your a loner or like pain.
