You do know how alcohol and water behave? If you pour together 1L of water and 1L of alcohol, you will end up with less than 2L of liquid. So volume can be variable while weight remains the same.

Also, these laws tend to stem from the 19th century.

I don't think I have ever bought beer from the grocery store. I am kind of a beer snob like others on here. I have an uncle that calls beers like Bud and Coors "Canoe Beer" because it is so close to water.

Hmmmm....Alcohol weighs less than water so a liter of alcohol weighs less than a liter of water. A liter of alcohol + a liter of water is not less than 2 liters of volume. I don’t believe that’s the case. 2 liters of fluid is 2 liters of fluid. It definitely weighs less than 2 liters of water. This is why you up concert when translating ABW to ABV

Horse p*ss is the more common term.

Grocery stores sell more than 'Murrican rice beer, by the way. Not much, and no longer to me, but it's pretty common to see Fat Tire, Blue Moon, Avalanche and Colorado Native there. Not the finest and most exclusive vintages, but not Kerrrs, neither.

Going back to the math. A fluid ounce of alcohol has less alcohol than a weighed ounce of alcohol or to say it another way, 1 ounce of alcohol by weight equals 1.26 fluid ounces.

I wasn't disputing that; if I wasn't clear, when you have old laws dealing with close measurement of something that is (literally) a little slippery, it was probably easier to weigh the goods than try to measure their (varying) volume. Hence the two measurements, used under slightly different conditions.

Back to the OP, again - I scoured the Safeway on Hampden and Tower for any clue that they sell only 3.2 beer, or that the brands sold may be different because of that. No notices on the beer aisle. No notices up on the front notice board with all the other stuff. Fat Tire box unmarked except for that blurry production number string.

I was going to put the question to a manager, but none were around and the CS desk was unmanned. Another day.

Don't know what to tell you. The Safeway and Kings nearest to me have these placards on their doors both out front and on the coolers and have for as long as I can remember. I guess you neighborhood is non-conformist that way, as I thought it was a requirement to have these where they sold 3.2 beer.

Perhaps you would be well served to contact the media and start a "why can't they fix that" campaign to save any future residents from being deceived into think they are getting higher alcohol content beer at a supermarket or perhaps push the lobby forward to create entire beer, wine, and alcohol departments in grocery stores via law.
