If others at the book club are drinking, the OP doesn't have to partake. Someone mentioned he was looking for a weed friendly apartment. He can probably smoke his weed at the book club if he so desires.

Weed book clubs. If that doesn’t already exist, someone needs to invent it.

I would think weed and book discussions would go well together. How could this not already exist?

What do you like to do? There are almost certainly groups around Denver that share your interests that don't meet at bars or drink. Doesn't have to be through meetup. Lots of facebook groups out there.

If you're having a hard time finding groups that share your interests then expand your radius. What have you wanted to try/learn? Great opportunity to learn something new and meet people by finding groups about something you have never done.

I personally think meeting people as an adult out of school is generally challenging if you don't have a hobby. Most people do seem to make their friends via hiking, biking, gym, etc. So those of us that like watching Netflix are with a piece of pie (my current state in addition to playing in a forum) are not going to find people that way.

I spent my first year pretty much lonely and then create my own networking group for women (Women of Denver) and now I have friends that way. My best suggestion is to go to networking events, look for the people on the edges that don't seem to be buying in and start a conversation. Then, add them to a list and start inviting them to go along to events with you. I've also met people volunteering as well.

... you can also meet 'real' people from forums

Met several from C-D, have not discovered the 'axe-murderer' (yet)

Be careful, be wise.
as you mention... go out of your way to engage (and help) others.

I got rid of my TV in 1968, and do not have internet coverage at home... so a few additional challenges, but no 'netfix', cable TV, Videos, 'on-line-gaming' or Youtube diversions.

'real' conversations is always another option, should you find someone capable to still doing that.

Last I knew, they need volunteers, and, if that is something that is of interest to you, volunteering might be a perfect way to get to know a lot of local, like-minded people pretty quickly.
I don't know if this is an interest but there are lots of local stores with Adventurers League play, you can look them up in WOCs website. People are usually cool and you will end up getting invited to home games before you know it!

I met some of my closest friends in DEN at bars, believe it or not. Met nobody from work or any leagues I joined.
