we moved into a house we previously rented (hot water heat & a cooler).

-Somehow the tenant always had the house warm in the summer. They had all the windows wide open and the cooler running mid day. I respect it is what they wanted to do no matter what. We down sized and live in the house currently.

-We run the same cooler on low only at night, keep all the windows closed except the master bedroom in the basement. We temporarily run the cooler if cooking & slightly open a kitchen window, run the dryer & slightly open the mud room window. Close things up when done. Utility bills are low.

-Newer cooler pump motors have stems you snap off and slip a 1/4" hose on. Siphons off a small portion of the cooler water. Add a small 1/4" plastic valve to regulate the water loss. Result; the house dosnt smell musty. Run the junk water to a near by tree.

-yes the larger bedroom with a full bath is in the basement. The hose was built in the late 50's. I have always kept the house totally detailed because the 5year plan was to move in my self. The up stairs bedrooms are smaller and have a common hall bath. Again the tenant wanted nothing to do with the basement bedroom. The basement rooms were clean un used.

Get some solar screens installed on all of your windows and get a swamp cooler.

I've been without A/C multiple times...including when I was out there. You need fans, blinds to keep the sun out, and a cold wet towel wrapped around your neck. If you have wrist bands wet those and put them on.
