Hi, I'm helping my brother in Aurora replace his broken central AC system (work to be done by professional company)

Is it worth opting for a heat pump instead of a straight AC set-up in your climate? I think the cost difference for the two is minimal.

He has a gas furnace already, so the heat mode for the new heat pump would mainly be used during mildly cold weather, not extremely cold days.

Would he save utility costs by having a stand-by heat pump mode for mild winter weather??? I don't want to base my decision only on what the HVAC tech says.

Thanks, especially if you've someone who has had to make this decision already.

Nope.
Buy a high SEER AC unit.
Insulate more.

dont see a lot of residential heat pump installations here but the OP could start a trend?
Gas forced air heat & evap coolers are simple functional inexpensive technology. Go with simple.

insulate more (as stated above)
re think the the thermostat setting
get bedroom(s) ceiling fans

I'm going to be a contrarian here. Since you are replacing an existing unit, I'd definitely get a quote on a high seer heat pump as well. If the difference is not that great AND you can get controls that switch automatically between the heat pump and the gas furnace the savings can be fairly significant.

I would not want to have to manually decide when to run the heat pump and when to run the gas, however.

It all comes down to how much money and how long the payback will be.

Agree. Go with the SEER. Heat pumps 'work' but it feels like they're blowing cold air. Wife will kill me if I ever buy another one.
