Hi all,

I am moving to Denver in May/June of 2019 from Connecticut. I have a physical disability and I am moving because my parents want to move out there and I need to have them nearby. I am applying to the MSW program at Denver University and I am really nervous. I feel like the people in Colorado are friendlier than the ones in Connecticut (at least from when I visited). I am also part of the LGBTQ community so I am kind of nervous about making new friends and becoming emotionally adjusted to the city. I was also wondering how to navigate the snow in the winter because I heard it gets bad in the winter. Thank you for reading this and I hope you have a good day.

Thanks,

I grew up in Connecticut and now live in the Vail area, the weather is so much better here than back East so don't let that worry you at all.

For LGBTQ, I don't have first hand experience but if I go on family and friends in Connecticut they tend to be somewhat close minded on many issues. In general Colorado is a more tolerant and accepting place over Connecticut, we have so many people moving here that there is a lot of change instead of stagnation. You'll make new friends, enjoy the adventure.

With Denver being the largest city and most liberal big city in a multistage region, it has a strong LGBT presence.

It will be a big change in a lot of ways, but I think a change for the better.

Regarding weather, yes, Denver does get snow, sometimes a lot all at once. But it melts off pretty quickly - the temps don't even have to be all that high, but the greater intensity of the sun makes a big difference. So even with a fairly large snow fall of 8 inches or more, it's typically all gone in a few days, not like New England where the first snowfall of the year can freeze over and you are stuck with the rutted gray ice for the next 6 months.

I'm not LGBT but my understanding is Denver has a pretty active community and DU in particular seems quite supportive, so I think you'll find good resources and plenty of people to connect with.

Thank you guys for all the responses. I used to live in Jackson Hole so I thought the entire West was like that during the winter. I appreciate you taking the time to respond and all of your answers has helped.

Thanks,

Rory

LGBTQ is a very broad spectrum. Which letter are you?

Me too. You'll enjoy Denver. We're pretty live-and-let live here. If your disability limits mobility, you'll have the same logistical issues you'd find anywhere in a US major metro area.
