They are made of siliconized rubber that stays much softer in cold weather than an all season tire which turns in to hard plastic below 30 degrees. They also have aggressive siping that effectively creates hundreds of small gripping edges on snow. They’re much more friendly to drive around the city all winter than an old school studded tire.

I wouldn’t recommend that anybody outside of full time mountain residents get studded tires.

You have some reading to do.

I can tell you by my own observation in COLO SPGS that mag chloride is sprayed as a liquid from what looks like gasoline semi-tankers fitted with a simple spray pipe running parallel to the back bumper. At a distance it looks like a normal gasoline tanker truck, but upon closer inspection the flashing lights and spray pipe give it away. Sand is spread from dump trucks fitted with snow plows. The mag chloride will turn a garage floor black when it drips off of a wet car.

If you are behind or shortly behind a mag truck, I've found that they actually make the road feel slick for a period of time.

Probably due to the fact that you're driving on a wet, icy surface. Liquid mag chloride doesn't enhance traction like sand would, it serves to melt ice over a period of time.

The application of sand to winter roads has declined significantly over the last 30 years.
It was discovered that the larger particles were ground down by vehicles and then became airborne and contributor to the brown cloud.

P.S. I did not think that my tiny, snarky comment about SkyDog was going to cause this thread to explode. The poor OP must feel that it snows 300 days a year here. When she visits she is going to be looking for the ski lifts in the parking lot at Mile High Stadium.

No more tire and winter road treatment talk? Ok...

OP come on out for a visit. Wide open vistas, majestic views, pleasant folks and outside of fire and inversion season fresh air . It's definitely worth a look!

I’m looking forward to visiting now! I need to prepare myself it sounds like lol. The most I walk outside is to my neighborhood corner store lol. When I workout it’s inside at the gym. Being outside is different haha just breathing is different. I went hiking in the mountains once. It was beautiful and I felt like I was dying. So as to not embarrass myself I think I’ll take my workouts outside.

Drink lots of water, moisturize frequently (liberally apply lip balm, face lotion, hand lotion, etc.), and don't push yourself over the limit, and you should be okay.
