I got along with two wheel drive along the Front Range my whole adult life there (almost 30 years). And as others have mentioned, four wheel drive isn't four wheel stop. When I was photographing accidents long ago, in the winter they almost all involved 4WD vehicles. I rarely saw an old Mustang or Camaro in the ditch (people were still using them as daily drivers); I think the drivers were just more careful.
