Anyone do this recently? I'm wondering what it's like. I heard that it's in a sorry state now. It used to be a big thing before Colo. legalized casinos, and now I guess it's dwindling. We are looking for something fun to do with another couple, that involves drinking, but not just sitting and drinking. Bowling is out as my DH just had a surgery.

Yeah, I went a couple years ago to the track in commerce city a couple times. Pretty sad actually, but it's definitely a different group of people you'd not see in Cherry Creek and a dying diversion as well. Not really thrilling or exciting, but betting cheaply is fun. Watching the races is kind of fun. You don't have to stay long, and admission is about $2 per person with free parking. Indoor and outdoor seating.

Just what I thought...I read an article that said that before casinos in Colo., they had around 6,000 attending. Now they are down to 200. Bummer. We probably won't go with our couple friends, but maybe just me and DH just to see a dwindling American past-time.

Yeah, that's a good way to look at it. When I went it looked like there was about 200 people. Although you'd see people who really seemed like avid fans, and if you pick up a program it gives a interesting glimpse into the industry.
It's really easy to pick up on the betting and the cashiers are very helpful. It does have the feel of a fading pastime (like a mob movie almost) that's just lost it's relevance in today's pet-friendly eco-friendly world. I wouldn't say "you'll be glad you went" but nobody else at a party will be able to say they've been so it's an experience to have under your belt at least. |

hmmm, same reason we go to the only drive-in left in Denver. They are just fading away.
