A few days ago I started a thread in the Colorado forum regarding the '65 flood. I put it in the state forum as there was hundreds of millions of dollars of damage not just in the Denver area but also Colorado Springs, Palmer Lake, Longmont, Loveland, and several counties in eastern Colorado.

By today's figures the total damage regarding money was put at 4 billion dollars. Yep, 4 billion. The youtube Kaaboom has here obviously has no sound to it, we're lucky we even have a youtube.

Every bridge from Sedalia all the way through to the Colfax bridge went down. All of them.

Thousands of homes were ruined.

Hundreds of businesses ruined.

The Rocky Mountain News, which was located on west Colfax in Denver, had to use the Denver Post printing machines to get their paper out to circulation. Had to use them for a few days.

Every type of debris imaginable went right up the Platte River, all the way to North Platte, Nebraska, and even east of there.

Similarly the Arkansas River had the same set of problems as heavy rains pummeled Pueblo, Las Animas, and La Junta. There was damage on the Arkansas River way past the Kansas border.

According to the Denver Post 21 people died as a result. Other sources I've read online have the figure at 28.

Picture a situation where there are no cellphones. No 911. Calling the operator on a rotary phone for an emergency, and yes, phone service went out in Sedalia, Louviers, Littleton, Englewood, and southwest Denver, specifically the Athmar Park area lost phones and electricity for a couple days. It was an absolute nightmare. I lived in west Englewood back then, I was there, I know.

A couple days ago the Denver Post did a one and a half page story on this tragedy.

A much more concise story and I mean MUCH more, was done in Westward magazine just recently, IIRC it was April 27th of this year. Google in "Westword article-1965 South Platte River Flood."

Wow, does anyone remember the Government's attempt at Nuclear Fracking?

Project Rulison??? They blew up an atomic bomb (device) under the ground near Parachute, Colorado on September 10, 1969. A placard, erected in 1976, now marks the site where the blast took place. It is accessible via a gravel road, Garfield County Route 338.

Project Rio Blanco??? They blew up three atomic bombs (devices) under the ground approximately 36 miles northwest of Rifle on May 17, 1973. A placard, erected in 1976, now marks the site where the test was conducted. The site is accessible via a dirt road, Rio Blanco County Route 29.

Funny how people forget or don't believe that atomic bombs were detonated in Colorado.

BTW the tests didn't work, the natural gas was too radioactive to be used.

Worked real close to the downtown Woolworths, my home away from home. Still think they had the BEST grilled cheese!!! Maybe, because they were cheap and fresh, pickles and chips and a Coke for under 2 bucks???? Yum!!

Also, Denver Drumstick.

I remember the Brentwood Shopping center.....Dolly Madison Ice cream. I was so skinny those summers and could eat an ice cream cone a day and not gain weight!!! Ahhh, those were the days!!

Does anyone remember or have stories to tell about Shotgun Willies ( before it was a strip club) late 1970's, and one of the hottest bands 'Dawson'?

I just found this thread earlier this week and have now read it from start to finish. I can't believe that no ne mentioned the Latin Quarter Apartments on Evan and Quebec. I thought everyone either lived there in the 70's or knew someone that did yet it hasn't been mentioned.
Was in Boulder/Broomfield '74-'80 and then moved to Monaco and Evans from '81-'90. This thread brought back some great memories.

Re: Shotgun Willie's

IIRC it was "Andy's Smorgasboard" until the 70s when it was the "Bavarian Inn" for a while. Our credit card receipts read "Bavarian Inn" for at least 20 years after its demise. To prevent the wife from knowing where you went.

Smorgasboard is another name for "buffet" but the food was a lot more fun and upscale than Furr's just south on Colorado. (Mac & cheese, and Salisbury steak were my favorites at Furr's)

At strip clubs before some laws were changed, the dancers could be completely nude. Many ad hoc anatomy lessons were therefore conducted.

In 1984 at my best friend's bachelor party, I brought my camera and took a couple of flash photos. The bouncer, who reminded us of Lurch from the Addams Family, grabbed my camera, opened the back, and pulled the film out and exposed the entire roll. I got them to pay me $5 for the cost of the film. D'oh !

OMG I lived at Latin Quarter in 84-86. We called it "The Nickel" and it deserves its own thread for all the shenanigans that went on.
