Colorado Mining Company had the best steaks and a delicious stuffed potato. Yeah, that was the place for Bronco watching. Down the street was Cork n Cleaver, which was also good, and then the Discos, The Lift, and London House were close by. There was another big disco, but I forgot the name (I think a Target is there now). Yeah, I remember that Der Weiner Schnitzel and wish I could have one now. Oh, yeah, I think there was a funky Mexican restaurant near there called Jose O'Shea's. Of course I remember Rick's Cafe, and used to hang out there a lot. There was a breakfast cafe near Washington Park, I think it was called Annie's? There was a big hotel on Colorado Blvd. named the funkiest name, Mollie McGee's. I stayed there when I first came. Anybody remember that cool little gas station that said "we're a bobcat for service." and had a sign pic of a bobcat? This is all around Colorado Blvd, and Speer and Alameda I think if I remember correctly. Out west, yes, I remember the places on West Colfax mentioned, including Casa Bonita. There used to be a May D&F out there at Westland. I have no idea what's there now, and I think that department store went out of business maybe a decade ago? There are so many places I just can't remember the names of, places downtown and along Speer? Blvd. Yeah, went to see concerts at Ebbits Field, Red Rocks, and some other places. There was a really famous theatre downtown where they held concerts. |

Anyone remember Boulder's first used music store, Trade-A-Tape? I miss the place, it's been gone about 10 years now. Started up around October of 1971 and was located off 28th Ave. and Arapahoe in a strip mall that was knocked down maybe 5 years after they opened. Their first two years in business they sold only 4 and 8 track tapes. The 4 tracks were $1 and the 8 tracks were $2. They kept the business expenses down to a bare minimum and I mean bare! They would use 3/4 inch thick #4 wood, 10 feet long and 8 inches wide. And used cinder blocks 5 feet apart from each other. To test the tapes you could listen to them on car stereos placed 5 feet apart from each other. They didn't have chairs for the customers, you just sat on a sawed off tree stump! How's THAT for rustic? But they got in tapes all the time and done a great business. When they got out of the strip mall around the summer of '73, they moved 20 blocks or so east on Arapahoe in a small building that is now a stained glass business. They got involved in buying albums later when they moved, I'll get to that in another post. There is an interesting story there.

I remember a great Mexican restaurant called Gordo's, I think on Alameda, from my DU days. Anybody else remember this place?

This is a fun thread...I still love Denver, lived there 6 years ('02-08) and was in Colorado Springs for 5 years before that, went to Denver often then. I still own a condo in Greenwood Village and go back every few months, may move back next year full time.
Lots of things I remember from my 6 years there--(some of which probably go way back) that I remember quite well: Bull & Bush pub in Glendale. This was my Thurs-Fri night hang out for 4 years, was working right down the street on Colorado & Exposition. Love this place--the beer, the food, the good times. 2 bars closer to downtown--Govn'rs Park and Bennys Americas on Illiff, at the edge of Aurora. Caldonias on Illiff at Parker Road Been to Casa Bonitas a couple of times w/ friends Colpar Hobbies in Aurora on Havana Tattered Cover in LoDo and in Cherry Creek (the CC one moved last year) Concerts at Red Rocks Concerts at Fiddlers Green (now Coors Amphitheatre) Jazz at El Chapultepec Herman's Hideaway baseball at Coors Field football at Mile High Stadium hockey at McNichols Arena Riding the Light Rail (a great addition to the area, IMHO). I'm getting homesick now.. ![]() |

The Bull and Bush! I'm quite sure we once had a company Christmas Party there.
Does anybody remember in the not-so-distant past when they had the Hatfields (South side) and McCoys (North side and still may be there) at I-70 on Federal? |

McCoy's is still there.
I grew up North of Denver -- off of 84th & I 25. Back then, people would say, "You live all the way up there." like it was the edge of civilization. I watched the town grow into a city, complete with skyscrapers. |

McGowdog-whazzup? Yep, McCoys is still there and puts out a great breakfast AND lunch. Used to stop in there a lot when I lived on the front range. Kind of a hassle getting in and out of there as the intersection is a bottleneck but still worth it, For some reason, Hatfields doesn't ring a bell with me, and I lived in Littleton. Must have opened after I moved in 1993.

Wow...started this just to reminince a tad, 12 pages later, thanks for all the responses!
There was a restaurant off north Santa Fe called Buffalo Trading post or something like that? Really old place, lots of history, hundreds of stuffed animals... A steak house right on north Santa Fe, just south of Speer...opened around 1983 or so, used to be Zekes Grocery. You could get fresh made sandwiches for 25cents even up into the mid 70's. Mom and Pop record store on west Colfax...I want to say it was east of Sheridan, but don't recall for certain. Little red brick building. 1975/76? the group Alabama was there signing albums, hardly anyone showed up. Englewood Speedway...long gone. I assume Lakeside Speedway is too. Street racing at 39th street and Peoria...sanctioned by Denver Police from 10pm til midnight on Friday/Saturday nites. I saw over 100 cars out there, minature timing lite, even unmarked cruisers with cops in 'em taking a run for fun. When people started trailering in pure dragrace built cars, they shut it down. A cop named Snyder? Took great joy in writing tickets on 16th street. The Saab and Fiat dealership on Broadway just before the freeway overpass. The Gates family compound on west Jewell??? It was beside a golf course. A hispanic activist named Danny Salazar? |
