More Snow And Cold, Cold Temps Coming???
We know that it is still winter here in the Denver metro area........but, ANOTHER BIG STORM later this week????? We are hearing, up to a foot of new snow and COLD, COLD temps!!!!! They are forecasting a high on Friday of between 6 and 10 degrees. Now, for us "older folks", this isn't fun or beauty any more, this is down right "irritating". Any of you "older folks" out there (55 plus) feel this way???. Now we really know why some people have a "winter home" in Southern Calif. or Florida and a "summer home" here.
You folks that love your snowboarding/skiing might love all of this snow, but some of us "older" non-skiiing people don't.
What do you think.....AND, let's make our replies as "nice" (if there is such a word) as we can. The wife/I are only stating our opinion in this Thread.
THANKS

They also forecasted really cold temps with the last storm and that didn't really happen. The last two storms they have not called very accurately. That's not to say they won't be wrong this time around.
This is an El Nino year, which means that we (the U.S.) will be getting unusual weather from what we are used to. We have definitely seen that. From others I have talked to back east, they are commenting that they haven't gotten very little snow from what they are used to.

That last storm dumped plenty of snow into southern Colorado. Those rural folks were definitely feeling it.
It is indeed very unusual. It's been awhile since I have heard of an avalanche in December (on Berthoud Pass, yet, where both my kids always took the snowboarding bus to Winter Park!)
There have been other El Nino years, but I don't remember Colorado getting three snows in three weeks back then.
The Colorado ranchers (over a thousand) are hoping for help from FEMA (thousands of cattle buried under snow):

Being an El Nino year, doesn't mean that it will be exactly like any other one previously. There is always variation when it comes to weather. A lot depends on just how the jet stream is affected and the ocean temps in the Pacific.
My comments on weather forcasting are related to the forecasts for the metro area, which have not been so accurate these last two storms.

Yes.
The interesting thing is that hasn't Denver actually received *more* over-average snow than the mountains actually have? This new storm could put y'all over the season average--and it's only January.
We shall see what happens with this new, very cold, slow-moving system, which is supposed to come in Thursday. A lot can happen in 3-4 days--maybe it will shift south again, maybe not.

I think the arctic, ultra-cold is a for-sure thing this time around. We always get a couple weeks of arctic temps here and there. Snow will be hard to predict -- usually arctic blasts don't yield lots of snow, but the front edge of the storm could pack some snow in before the temps drop.
Hopefully the mountains get some decent snow with this storm. Seems a waste to get ultra cold temps without any mountain snow. But, the front range could do with little to no snow this time around; we need some time let this snow evaporate. I'm with you on that one, LoveBoating.

Re: Snow and Cold
I'll tell you what, I normally welcome a little snow and cold temperatures but I can't beleive how cold and snowy it has been this year. I must admit that it's getting a little tiring. My husband and I decided we need a break from the cold so we just booked a 4 day cruise to the Bahamas this morning. We're going for a long weekend... leaving the last weekend in January. Lets just hope that a sudden snowstorm doesn't prevent us for flying out- we need to see some sunshine

Just listened to Mike Nelson, Chief Weather Man with Channel 7, and he is very sure that we are in for some real "Artic" cold air to hit us on Friday/Saturday along with up to a foot of new snow on Thursday thru Saturday. This morning when I listened to him, he said the high temp for Friday/Saturday would be between 6 and 15 degrees. Tonight, he is now saying that the high temp for Saturday will be 0....yes, zero degrees. Him and his assistants are doing some research and he said that we (Denver metro) may see the coldest temps that have ever been recorded on this date. He sounds real serious about this coming storm and cold weather.
There are two words he is using in his forecast, "BE PREPARED!!"

As a 25yr old snowboarder, I hate all this BS Snow, I actually just signed up for this forum to find out some things about moving to Arizona, If I want to go snowboarding I have to first dig my car out of the snow and HOPE that I dont get stuck again trying to get down my completely unplowed street. And dont even get me started on the COLD. I moved here from OH to get away from the negative side of the thermometer. But in retrospect our winters are not usually this bad, I have been here 7 years and this is the first time the cold has tried to run me off to the desert.

Uh, snow happens. I was in Santa Fe for snow 10 days ago. 18.1 inches. Not only the record for a single day, but for the whole month!
The snow won't accumulate if it is bitter cold. Right Mike? National Western weather I have my tix for next Tuesday!
