Im looking for some place that is a little less expensive than Denver but still relatively close to commute to say 1 hour or less

To find a place within one hour, simply get a map and a compass and draw a circle with a 40 mile radius. That will give you a rough idea. Prices do vary around the metro area. It might be better to live closer to work and look for the lower-cost areas near the job.

Most of the suburban areas are low crime. You can google crime stats.
