I'm with David Aguilar on this one. Maybe you need to stop listening to whoever has been telling you crap about Aurora. What he/she is saying is probably just recirculated garbage that he/she has "heard" about Aurora but hasn't really experienced personally. People do that all the time... they like to talk trash about the "other side of town." If you don't want to hear other points of view, then what are you doing on this forum?

Now, let me educate:

Aurora is the third largest municipality in Colorado with a population of just over 300,000. It has some really bad parts with crime, drugs, and prostitution (East Colfax-- and the old, bad reputation that street has really hasn't changed at all in the Aurora section), some really upscale parts with million dollar houses (some of the new masterplanned communities by Smoky Hill & E470), and the vast majority of it is neither; just a middle of the road, middle class, diverse city.
I would suggest staying out of anything north of and including 6th Ave, and you'll avoid most of the bad parts right there. Think of this as "North Aurora." Note that Green Valley Ranch isn't too far away from "North Aurora," so in the future, when the homes there aren't too nice and new anymore, there may be some spillovers from North Aurora and Montbello (a neighborhood in far NE Denver).
The area between 6th Ave and Iliff is a pretty normal area, maybe slightly on the "lower" end of the middle class class, but it's anything but a ghetto. Think of this as "Central Aurora" or "North-central Aurora." I personally do not shop at the Aurora Mall, however I feel totally comfortable going into the outdoor shopping center just north of the Aurora Mall north of Alameda. Generally, the further east you go (towards Buckley and continuing east) in what could be called "central Aurora," the better. I personally would not live off Havana or Peoria in this area, but that's just me.
The area between Iliff and Smoky Hill Rd is also a normal, middle class area, with some pockets of "cheaper" housing but pockets of upper middle areas as well. Think of this as "South-central Aurora." The zone between (and including) Iliff and Smoky Hill Rd is where I would personally choose to live if I was moving to Aurora. It's not too expensive; it's not too cheap, it's not too ultra-suburban like SE Aurora and it's not too urban either like East Colfax.
Once you get south of Smoky Hill Rd and/or east of Buckley you get into "southeast Aurora," the nicest and newest part of the city (think 80016 zip code here, although 80015 is also technically SE Aurora). A lot of what is geographically "southeast Aurora" actually includes parts of Centennial. This area, as I've said before is pure suburbia. It's also the farthest from the airport; it would be more convenient living in SE Aurora if you were working in the south metro area.
