Is the Five Points/Dwtwn Colfax Area 'self sustaining'?
What I mean is: could I live, work and play... all in this area?
AND...do it relatively cheaply?
(Like 500-600 for an apartment.)
Thanks!

I don't know about the rent number - probably doable, but yes, you could easily live in this area and have what you need in close proximity. Obviously there are many jobs downtown, then you also have clubs, bars and restaurants all over from LoDo to Cap. Hill and Uptown. You also have many cultural ammenities in this area from major league sports to the library, museums, performing arts center, amusement park, etc.

You could do this easily and cheaply but you will get what you pay for. There are some wonderful places and some real dives with the apartments, and $500 - $600 would more then likely find you in a questionable living situation. The work and play will be very easy, it is the low rent that could be an issue. Just don't sign any long term leases and the further away from Colfax the better, due to noise, less parking and tons of foot traffic. Look into apartments also along the South Broadway corridor and down Downing and Corona, closer to Cheeseman Park. I am on 7th in Governor's Park and can walk to King Soopers or Safeway, both three blocks away, Esquire Movie Theater, Ace Hardware on 9th and Downing, tons of restuarants - cheap eats and high end, and the neighborhood is just great in general. You should attempt the range of $800 or $900 and be in a better area. Down south Broadway there is a K-Mart, a Home Depot at I-25 and Santa Fe, a light rail station, live music venue (smaller then Colfax, but more local bands), and excellent Landmark theater - the Mayan, and constant bus service up and down Broadway and on Lincoln with easy access to downtown.

Look into uptown on that range. Capitol hill is do-able however, you might need a roomy at that range. The further north you go to N. Capitol Hill (uptown, everything north of Colfax) you can find cheaper rent. That is in buildings not razed yet for yuppie condo complexes. Five points is cheap, but more dangerous then uptown and Capitol hill. However, it is livable. It isn't like a ghetto of Philly or N.Y. or anything.

I would highly recommend staying away from Uptown if all you can afford is $500-600. My first apartment in Denver was a studio at 20th & Sherman and I didn't find it convenient at all except for the fact I worked at The Brown Palace which was located only 4 blocks away. I would agree with DenverAztec and go closer to Cheesman/Wash Park areas. My second apartment was on 12th and Columbine, and I found the area much more desirable/convenient. I like the South Broadway, 13th Ave, and East Colfax bar scenes better than Downtown's too.

Uptown, east of Pearl South of 19th and west of York would fit your needs. There is a safeway nearby, countless bars and resteraunts and music venues all within walking / biking distance and the 15 runs that section of Colfax frequently.
You can also hit that target in terms of rent on the western edge of Cap hill, poets row comes to mind around 10th and Sherman. The grocery stores are a bit further away unless you count whole paycheck.

Although my oldest son ( now 30 and a professor at Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island) would agree with you!!! I DON'T!!
He is now ( as of last night) in downtown Denver. This is his Love and old stomping grounds!! He says,....stay South of Colfax and West of Broadway and,.... play in Wash Park. I don't know.....I was never allowed any where near there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Of course, he will be going back to J&W in 5 days but, he LOVES downtown Denver and, will try and relocate there! GO FIGURE?!!!

West of Broadway would put you in the city proper or the golden triangle so we can assume you meant to type east of Broadway, and there is nothing wrong with anything north of Colfax for that matter either.
Wash park is good if you like the crowds. City park has more space, a zoo, a better playground, the Nature and Science museum, Jazz in the park on Sundays, better running trails (in the process of installation), etc.
