Default Considering Denver: Liquor Laws??

I am in the process of trying to decide between Pittsburgh and Denver and while the local liquor laws will probably not make or break my decision, the do attribute to the over all quality of life (for a person in my demographic/status).

What are the liquor laws like in Colorado?

Can you buy liquor at the grocery store?
Are there certain limits on the amount of alcohol sold in stores?
Can you buy beer or liquor on Sunday?

What is bar closing time?

THANKS!

You can now cross Pittsburgh off the list now; All else being equal, you'll get drunk cheaper in Denver due to altitude.

That's a little too broad to answer here on City-Data. Similar to those of other states for DUI, underage drinking, etc.

Can you buy liquor at the grocery store?
No.

Are there certain limits on the amount of alcohol sold in stores?
Not that I know of, but I don't generally buy a lot.

Can you buy beer or liquor on Sunday?
Starting tomorrow, yes.

What is bar closing time?
I have no idea. 2 AM???

THANKS!
You're welcome!

Here's what I'm wondering. You can buy beer in supermarkets, but nothing else, not even wine. Now, I would assume the state wants to make it harder for people to overindulge and create a nuisance or hazard for others. However, what are you more likely to get drunk on, a case of beer or a bottle of wine? You can't pick up a bottle of wine to have a glass with dinner, but you are allowed to buy as much beer as you want at any store, get staggeringly drunk, and proceed to engage in fights, drive under the influence, etc. This seems odd. And I am not condemning beer drinkers, but I know people who like to drink for the sake of drinking, and beer is always their choice. And I've never seen Homer Simpson come home from work and open a bottle of Chardonnay.

You can buy 3.2 beer in the grocery stores, anything "harder" is sold only in the liquor stores. These laws get written in committee and sometimes no one knows why they are written the way they are. I think you are from Illinois, prariestate; I remember being shocked when I moved there at the tender age of 22 that you could buy liquor in the grocery stores, and on Sundays after noon! Is that still the case? I remember when they allowed sales on Election Day. My husband (at the time) said he thought it was so people would vote in their normal state of mind!

I've posted a similar thread on the Pittsburgh forum and I can already tell that I am overwhelmingly going to get a lot of opinions on personal thoughts on drinking itself.

I don't want to be rude, but I do not care what your personal feelings are on drinking.

I want to know where you can buy beer, wine/liquor, what the bartime is, when the stores close, can you buy beer at bars and bring it home, etc.

I know people have strong feelings about things and stuff... but I am really looking for "just the facts ma'am."

REALLY?

Or is this just one of those urban myths about Denver?

Does the amount of oxygen in Denver really get you more intoxicated more quickly?

Do people also snore more in Denver?

Do people from Denver have to drink more when they go to lower altitude citiese like Portland or Chicago?

Does caffeine have a stronger effect?

I am not trying to be a smart ass, I have seriously wondered this stuff.

I looked at the thread over on Pittsburgh as well, and I don't think anyone was being very judgemental, either here or there (and that's saying something for that forum)! JMO.

Yes, in Illinois, you can buy beer, wine, liquor, whatever, at the grocery store.

In Chicago, there are bars that stay open until 5 am and others that open at 7 am.

Except Sunday when you can't buy alcohol (in any form) before noon which people complain about during football season.

If only they realized how good they have it!
