That's interesting Katiana, my mom protested Vietnam too. There is a split from Recreate 68. I've found other groups too. Are they closing the campus at CU Boulder? I thought they were closing Auraria, but another poster on this thread said that they could enter with FBI clearance. Better for your daughter to stay away from campus next week. I'm sure she'll be fine.

Wow, we've gone way off topic. My OP had nothing to do with free speech or the right to protest. I've repeatedly said now that I have to problem with either of those -- so we agree.

The Auraria Campus is open this week but will be closed to students next week. I-25 and the streets around Invesco will only be shut down Thursday afternoon and evening. I will be attending Barack's acceptance announcement next Thursday and was told that there will be no parking available. However, there will be shuttles at various points in the city to take us back and fourth. There was significant work to get my ticket/credentials to get into the event, but I am incredibly excited.
With respect to protesters, the only time anyone is going to be able to vote for a candidate that they agree with 100% of the time on 100% of the topics would be if they themselves were running for office. There will always be an issue or topic that you will not agree with and it could even be a topic that you are so passionate about that you feel the need to make it your sole issue. I am glad that the protesters have the right to protest and that guidelines have been established to keep it peaceful. Yes, you will have to prepare for trouble and plan for the worst, but this is done with everyday life and everyday situations. The DNC presents different issues as not only with Barack be in town but so will Oprah, Cher and God knows who else? Preferable, I would like to see Cher breakout a couple of tunes instead of hearing a day full of speeches, but who am I? ![]() Though it will be a hassle for those of us who live downtown, I figure if I cannot beat them then join them. This is a huge economic boost to Denver and all of Colorado and I welcome it. We handled events like the World Youth Day in 1993 with the Pope, the G-8 Summit, the NBA All Stars Game, at least that is what comes to mind, and we have done well with them. I don't recall razor clad holding cells being set up in a warehouse in Five Points for protesters of the Pope. Times have changed and the issues then were about peace, verse the state we are in now -War. Optimistically, I think we will have a great convention and seeing the schedule, our city will be well exposed and tons of money spent here. Yes, there will be some headaches, but at least from what I know, we have not received threats and we are not doing as Minneapolis is doing for the GOP. They have removed all planters from the downtown area and any item that could hold a bomb or chemicals, plus they have welded down their manhole covers. We may have received some threats and absolutely have taken some actions that the public is unaware of, but again, so much of this happens everyday and it is not publicized. Both candidates have been here numerous times and so often I never felt anything different in my neighborhood. Cheers to a peaceful Democratic National Convention! |

holy cow, where the heck have you been? Lurking?!
Lucky you gets to see Obama speak. Have fun! We have had threats, but like you said, they aren't publicized -- I've found out by word of mouth from my other friends in nearby highrises. |

Holy cats, I have been working and with some occassional lurking. My nights have been busy working for the Campagin for Change! I faced many rude comments on the phone and yes threats are out there, but not much weight behind them. Anybody in the public eye gets threats, it is whose that show they have insight that need to have immediate attention. To allow terrorist to scare you means that you are allowing them to win in their efforts. I am rising above that and celebrating the DNC and all it brings with it.

I understand what you were trying to say now. I too am scared of what these groups that are hell bent on violence and disruption. I am all for the peaceful protesters, but groups like the Anarchist group that attempted to blackmail our government for money scare me, I dint want our tax money to clean up after these goofballs. |

I don't want either one of those 2 idiots running our country.
Why couldn't John Edwards have run for the presidency? He would have been a shoe in. |
