There is an urban legend (which is fairly accurate) that it always snows for Halloween. The average date of the first snow is October 19. The earliest date of the first snow is Sept. 3. Do note that there is not continous snow cover from the first snow on. The fall snows are usually gone pretty quickly.

Last winter's (2007-2008) first snow was October 21, a Sunday.
Last snow was May 6, (if it wasn't May 6 it was the week of May 6)

Anytime between early September and early November.
I've seen it snow in Denver on September 10th (that's the earliest I remember) but we've also gotten our first snow on Halloween. It all depends on the year. I think the statistical average is early or mid October. Halloween is kinda the unofficial start to the snow season--although there have been late september and early october blizzards that have been doozies for the trees since they've still got leaves and when you dump that heavy, wet snow down on them, they snap pretty easily.

I remember the first time I moved to Denver in 1994 it snowed a couple inches on about Sept. 21st, then the following year, it snowed about 10" on Sept. 21st, knocking out power because the trees were still green with leaves (lots of branches down, power lines down). But the snow was gone within 24 hours and we didn't have snow again until November, and never that much snow through the entire winter.

It really depends on exactly where you are. Last year, my location in Central Denver did not receive any snow at all in October (just rain), but one weekend last year in mid-October there was a storm that dropped only rain where I lived but snow in many other parts of the metro area (depended on elevation). It certainly CAN snow in Central Denver in October or even September, but it never happened last year.
In the mountains, of course, it can snow anytime. In fact, last weekend Vail Pass was coated with snow.

tfox is right. It snowed in Boulder on my daughter's graduation day June 4, 2005. I can't find that on any snow record, even though The Weather Channel did a story on it.

In our area, it does seem to snow, or at least be windy, cold and miserable on Halloween, but just on Halloween. The day before, and the day after always seems nice. Go figure
