I have all the respect in the world for a cop who respects his or her own authority over people. I have nothing but contempt for those who abuse it. They should be held to a very high standard. Instead their abuses are usually whitewashed by an internal
investigation

You know, about the cigar thing, Denver cops are very western. I've seen cops wearing spurs on their boots, a lot of them smoke cigars, I think a lot of that just goes with Colo.

I was all over downtown this week and I thought the cops were doing a great job. I'm glad they were here to keep the peace. Just their presence alone probably helped people behave.

Atlanta Greg...keep in mind the intense stress that these guys are enduring to keep the security and peace in such a volitile environment. They are doing fine.

No kidding. If anyone deserves a pay raise it's the cops. They are hated targets, get spit on, shot at, kicked at. A job that can be really horrible. But I'm so glad people do it.

I think overall the city and the police did a great job of the situation dispite the stress that most city services were under. If you had a chance to experience any of the crowds you would see how much they were stretched. I think it was overall a great way to show that this city is capable of large scale events

I don't agree that the Denver cops are overpaid, some of the outlying areas in my opinion are though.

Denver has a very long and documented problem with corruption.

Here is a great one dating back to the 60's wherein Denver was nationally referred to as the crooked cop capital of the U.S.
THE LESSONS OF DENVER - TIME

In more recent years Denver police have come under fire for a rash of minority shootings, sheer ineptitude (raiding the wrong house and killing the mentally impaired man therein), brutality -- generally directed towards minorities and corruption related to off-duty hours worked which has resulted in some organizational changes.

Steve: Were you talking to me? I didn't say they were underpaid, I said if anyone deserved a raise, it was them. (Teachers right along side them IMHO).

As far as corruption goes, I don't think Denver cops hold a candle to other cities, namely, um, L.A.
