Nope spent most of my time on the western slope. Montrose and Grand Junction.
Have relatives in Battlement Mesa, Glenwood Spgs, Eagle, Redstone (near Aspen) and metro Denver.
Glad you haven't had a negative experience but no offense I know what I am talking about when it comes to Colo - your perspective doesn't change anything - sorry.
It is likely your experience is channeled - I would not be surprised to hear you moved to Highlands Ranch or some place similar. Chamber of commerce style rose colored glasses are always nice for those who can wear them - whatever works.
Colorado has its pluses like anywhere and as for myself I have the added advantage of family etc.. but that doesn't stop me for telling the whole truth.
I have zero vested interest here - someone asked a question and I gave an honest answer.

some people ask "where are you're from" because they would like to get to know you and asking about your experiences helps them start a conversation. It is not always a way to judge you. We have lived all over the US (military) and people all over ask where you come from especially if the accent is different. There were a few that made judgement but mostly it was to get to know each other. I wouldn't lump those people in with the general attitude of the area. Personally I would ask you where you've lived because I like to learn about other areas and about the person themselves.

To the OP: There is a disparity you may see here where people refer to folks in Denver as being unfriendly to outsiders, and then some folks say they are quite friendly to outsiders.
I can explain this disparity easily: an enormous amount of the population in Denver is transplants from California (90s migrants), Texas (80s migrants), the Northeast (70s migrants), and the first two groups do not yet consider themselves natives and therefore do not have any frustration with others who aren't natives. The third group there, as a previous poster from PA may have shown, considers themselves natives and doles out like the rest of the natives against foreigners.
Though there is also the fact that the younger generation in Denver (folks in there 20s now like me) grew up during so much immigration in that we have no qualms with transplants, save for the californians driving, and some disappreciate the housing bubble californian money caused.
Though what qualms we have with californians, we let the winter weather dole out the punishment to them. Everytime we see a california plate on a car in a ditch when it snows, we're snickering. Just a little.
But on your original topic, look at Lakewood/Golden area, tons of younger folks in these areas living in apartments (look around red rocks community college) supported by average service industry jobs. You will hear people say it's an older more family oriented area, but I would say that's why it's great for service industry. You can't support yourself on a service industry job to live in an area that is made for professionals, ala downtown, dtc, large new areas of aurora, broomfield, etc.
I love lakewood/golden area personally as it is one of the most central areas to downtown and the mountains, while still being more affordable because it's largely a community untouched by the money of the professional californian hans. It's a little older and more run down for this reason too, but altogether still safe, colfax in this area is miles safer than it was 10 years ago, just don't go picking up the ladies.
And if you visit, I can't stress this enough- *DO NOT* stay in a hotel on colfax. Yes there's tons of them, but they aren't for sleeping in.
Edit:
Californian Hans? Oh right, beware of that German brute, I don't know where he comes off!
