If you wanted to show someone the nature that the mountains has to offer, where would you take them? I'm coming out there at the end of October and since the mountains are such a big part of living in Denver, I wanted to travel up there and see what's there.

I'm not really into skiing, but parks, rock climbing, that kind of stuff would be cool. I just need some location names to add them to my google map.

The absolute nearest park that you can see great rock climbing is up Eldorado Canyon. It is real close, off of 93, just south of Boulder and the canyon is right there, about 3 miles west, and right there is a state park. It is a nice little quick trip, just as worthwhile as driving a long distance into the mountains.

Everytime I have been there, I have seen climbers going up the cliffs along this canyon. Eldorado Canyon State Park Home - Colorado State Parks

It has a nice little town around the old spa

Be sure to taste the water at the spring and spa

Default Rocky Mountain National Park

Hi - you might also consider Rocky Mountain National Park - close to the town of Estes Park. Have fun!

My advice on seeing and doing things in the mountains is to get a Jeep. Not a Liberty, Commander or Grand Cherokee, a real Jeep, a Wrangler. Even with a stock Wrangler you can get lots of places cars can't go. I recommend these books to get you started. They are sorted by geography and include directions to get there and while on the trails.

Amazon.com: colorado backroads

I've got the first two books on this page by Wells, and highley recommend them.

Depends on what type of rock climbing you want to do... trad? sport? toprope? There's a lot more than just Eldo depending on what you're looking for. Although late October might start to limit what you'd consider because you'd want something south facing so you're in the sun. More specifics on what you're looking for would help. Style and ability (are looking for <5.10? 5.10+?)

As for the skiing, you really wouldn't want to ruin your thoughts of what Colorado skiing is by going in late October, so even if you were interested in that I'd tell you not to bother.
