Can it really be 6 months already? My thoughts about Denver! (cliquey, theater)

Poor JJ, I think people need to give him a break. He lived here once, didn't like it. It's his opinion. I don't like it here either. Just because you don't love Denver doesn't mean you are lame. To each his own.
The difference is that you don't bash Denver every chance you get. You do point out some of its less stellar points, and that's fine. That's what this forum is for.
hmm. Yeah, I don't bash Denver every chance I get. I don't want to be one of those annoying people who other people say to them (well get the heck out then and shut up!). There are some good things to Denver and I know some of it I'll miss. And while I think it's small and whatnot, I can at least recognize all the things that others love about it here. So, yeah, point taken.
Denver isn't heaven on Earth, but I put it in my short list. If it was then only the ultra rich could afford to live there. There are some problems that need to be addressed, but nothings perfect.
I liked Pete's because after 8 hours of work and hours of class it was great to get a bite, Old Chicago's was the place if we wanted beer too.
I'm leaving Denver to move to a real city like Millwaukee; boy if I had a dollar for every time I have heard that old line....some of these observations by Jcob are so off base-I
inititially thought he was joking....Good Riddance....
What am I off base on exactly? Chubby's, Leela, Denver Diner, and Pete's Kitchen are the only places to get food in Denver after bar close, discounting 24-hour drive thrus like Burger King or Taco Bell that all cities have. In Milwaukee, even restaurants you are familiar with like Qdoba and Jimmy John's stay open until 3am on weekdays and 330am on weekends and in summer. Not to mention our local places like Ma Fischer's, Oakland Gyros, George Webb's, Dogg Haus, Pizza Shuttle, and Jalisco II are all either 24-hours or stay open until 3-4am. Keep in mind all of these places are within a few blocks of each other and all the bars on the East Side. Denver has no areas even remotely like this and even your college towns of Fort Collins and Boulder don't have them either.

I'm just putting information out there. I wish there had been a naysayer like myself back when I was looking to move to Denver initially. All I knew was Denver was bigger than Milwaukee and therefore I assumed it would be more urban then too. Little did I know. Since moving to Denver in 2004 I have traveled around the Southwest to Santa Fe and Palm Springs. I have also been out east to NYC and I have learned that I prefer the cities of the Rust Belt and East Coast. Denver wants to be like an eastern city rather than embrace its westerness and in the process has misled people like myself who thought it was impossible to have 3 million people and still be boring as hell. If someone isn't a nature lover, then Denver will be hell on earth. Not enough city for city folks. Joke all you want about Milwaukee, we got thick skin, and we're also not going anywhere any time soon. Milwaukee isn't a boom-and-bust town like Denver. The same influx of residents you are currently experiencing can just as easily turn into an Exodus. The bursting of a bubble like your recent downturn in real estate could send everyone packing for "greener" pastures.
JJ: ha! I'm a naysayer. Sometimes. Denver is just for certain folks, just like Milwaukee. Thing is, I lurk Miami threads and there are TONS of naysayers. But I have to take that with a grain of salt. Know what I mean. True that the lg. amts. of people moving here could just move out too, isn't that something like what happened to Detroit? Let's hope it doesn't happen here.
Metro Detroit still has like 5.5 million people and the city is over 1 million. Detroit has experienced "white-flight" on an astronomical level, making it the crown jewel of the Rust Belt it is today.
Isn't it weird that nobody besides a handful of us don't sing the praises of Denver. Like you said, Miami's forum has lots of naysayers, despite it being perceived as a tropical paradise? Denver is far from a paradise, yet nobody has anything to say about it that you couldn't read in a travel brochure.
JJ: I do agree with your last statement. Re: Detroit, I had some long ago recollection of it being this great city with people flocking there and then poof! they all went. Didn't know it was white flight.
Even katmoney said on another thread that if she wasn't into skiing and snow (was it?) she'd hate it here. Yeah, a lot of people view Miami as a tropical paradise until they move there! I thought working for lawyers would be like an Ally McBeal episode. Boy was I wrong! hahaha

So ... it is wrong that Denver has these franchise restaurants open after bar closing; but when they are in magical Milwaukee everything is kosher!
There are options beyond those you listed that fall into the non-chain category.

No, Denver has no areas like this that you are aware of. Making claims without knowledge makes those claims baseless.

So move back and quit your bitching. You clearly don't know much about Denver and prefer to project your unhappiness on everyone else.
You don't have to be a nature lover to live in Denver, in fact I would venture to guess more than half are not. Likewise, the city, which clearly you have no actual experience with does offer actual city living at an affordable price point when taking into consideration the available amenities.

I said every city has things like Burger King, McDonalds, and Taco Bell that stay open late, so I wasn't counting them. I'm dog-sitting for my brother in little itty bitty Oshkosh, WI and even this town has them. In Denver, Jimmy John's on 16th St. Mall closes at 9pm and Qdoba closes at 10pm, that's hardly the same as 3am. My point was that a restaurant chain like Qdoba that is based out of Denver doesn't even stay open as late in their hometown as they do in Milwaukee.

I forgot Silver Mine Subs delivers until 3am. Add another to the list of 4 or 5 late night options for the sprawling metro area.

So living in Uptown/Capitol Hill for 3 years doesn't qualify me to have an opinion? My claims aren't baseless they're facts. You haven't named any of these places in the Denver city or metro area that are supposedly like what I described, so actually you're the one making baseless claims until you can provide examples.

I already did. Like I mentioned I'm dog-sitting in BFE and passing the time on the forum. Perhaps if someone else besides me and a couple others on here offered any opposing views on Denver I wouldn't feel obligated to keep posting.

Where are you getting those statistics that over half of people in Denver aren't natrure lovers? Perhaps if you're referring to the city-proper that's probably true. I never ran across many minorities in the mountains and the most of them do live in Denver and Aurora. How do I have no experience with the city? I lived there almost 5 years total. I explored a great deal of the city and it didn't stack up to what I was used to. As far as city living goes, it takes more than some overpriced lofts along the Platte to fall into that category. To me city living translates to being able to study, shop, work, and party all within walking distance of my place of residence. No place in Denver satisfies all those criterion. DU comes closest but most people can't afford $50,000 a year for tuition and their enrollment is pretty small, around 10,000 students. What amenities does Denver offer that any city over 250,000 doesn't offer as well? Zoo, theatre, ballet, musuems, airport, universities, etc. Every city from Des Moines to Fargo has these same things.
Lots of people like Katmoney tolerate living in Denver just so they can snowboard, but I just can't get that into one particular activity to justify being miserable the rest of the year that isn't ski season. Others come from little towns in Kansas, Wyoming, or Nebraska and think Denver is Manhattan. Finally, the last group that finds Denver appealing are from sprawlopolises like Dallas and LA who think Denver is a compact, quaint little city.
Wow....I am off line for a couple days and everyone starts fighting!! This thread appears to be taking off too! I don't think I want Denver to be much bigger so it doesn't bother me when some people don't like it here. No place is perfect after all. For me Denver feels like heaven. Maybe in another 6 months I will feel different but I doubt it. I came from a place where fast food didn't even stay open pass midnight so having any options is wonderful! By the way Annie's Cafe and Mama's Cafe both on Colfax are open 24 hours as well. For those keeping count!
