[quote=jjacobeclark;6409081]What am I off base on exactly? Chubby's, Leela, Denver Diner, and Pete's Kitchen are the only places to get food in Denver after bar close, discounting 24-hour drive thrus like Burger King or Taco Bell that all cities have. In Milwaukee, even restaurants you are familiar with like Qdoba and Jimmy John's stay open until 3am on weekdays and 330am on weekends and in summer. Not to mention our local places like Ma Fischer's, Oakland Gyros, George Webb's, Dogg Haus, Pizza Shuttle, and Jalisco II are all either 24-hours or stay open until 3-4am.
jj,
I've read quite a bit of your posts throughout the Denver forum, and while you have valid points (I lived in Denver for a while a few years ago, and it's a nice place, but certainly has its limits/exaggerations (SP)) your ranting is getting quite lame.
Why is it such a big deal for a place to stay open that late at night? Is it really THAT big of a deal? Really? How about just going home when the bar closes? Did you actually DO anything to meet people in Denver, or did you just sit there and saulk like you do on this site? I'd wonder how fun it was to hang out with you since you evidently just went on and on about Milwaukee vs. Denver when you were socializing. You don't seem to write about much else, that's for sure.
While Milwaukee is a very underrated city (very easy to get around, lots of neat theaters, walkable, etc.), it's also a very...'from there' kind of place imo. And not just from Mlwkee, but from WI. I've got friends that have lived there for a couple of years (from the glorious place that is Iowa) and they've struggled to make decent friendships because most of the people they meet are the type that went to high school together and stayed that way, even keeping that mindset, and not really going out of their comfort zone. Very cliquey, and creepy.
I've also read some post by you saying something about Madison- I live in Madison. It's a nice place- quite a bit to do for a town (I emphasize TOWN) its size, and the surrounding area fits my fishing needs- not the lakes- too polluted. But outside the university, it's mainly just another small midwestern city with a few things to do. And again, it's a fairly tough place to meet people- outside the students it's mainly locals- people from Verona and Middleton that think Madison is the ONLY place to be, and again, aren't all that inviting overall. And the lakes smell awful in the summer...
Every place has its quirks and/or limitations. Stop making it a point to rain on someone's parade because they happen to enjoy something.
To the OP- sorry for threadjacking. Enjoy Denver, especially the weather- it's about 20 degrees in WI today and it's going to be like that for about 4 months. I'll have to bundle up just to start my car. THAT's something that doesn't happen in D-town consistently! Good to hear you're having a great time. By the way, if you're looking for a great dive bar- Candlelight Tavern- down there off of Pearl and Alameda (south side) I think...

Maybe in another 6 months I will feel different but I doubt it. I came from a place where fast food didn't even stay open pass midnight so having any options is wonderful! By the way Annie's Cafe and Mama's Cafe both on Colfax are open 24 hours as well. For those keeping count!

I don't believe Annie's is 24 hours.

I don't know about everyone else, but I'm past the point in my life where I want to eat anything, much less a hamburger, at 3:30am. (And no, I'm not referring to people who may work nights and need to grab something after work.)
But I guess that's just my perspective. Being able to get something to eat at a restaurant that late at night/early in the morning is just not on my radar screen.

People in WI start the night drinking at a friend's house before going out to the bars (mainly so you don't spend as much $$ at the bars). Then you go bar hopping until the bars close (230am on weekends). After the bars close you go to after parties where people spin records, play drinking games (like beer pong, flip cup, or bar dice), play card games (like Spades, President, or F*ck the Dealer), and continue socializing. Somewhere around 4am or 5am, whenever the party winds down, people go out to eat at aforementioned restaurants, before going home. This is an observable weekly routine throughout much of the state of WI, not just Milwaukee or Madison. I'm 26 years old. I'm not looking to settle down any time in the foreseeable future. People in CO live life at a much slower pace, even the younger crowd. I'm just offering up valuable information to people who make the mistake of thinking Denver is a party-town simply because The Real World recently filmed a season there.

That's because your state sucks; there's nothing to do there other than drink and get wasted. Hey, I'll hand it to you, you guys are great at what you do best.

This post explains well why you didn't make friends or feel you fit in in Denver, and why you returned to Milwaukee.
Best of luck to you.

Interesting, you just described my 20s. I lived in Capitol Hill then, and I waited tables and such at various restaurants and bars. My days off consisted of the very activities you mentioned, although I don't know F*ck the Dealer. But omg President was the bomb!!!! Maybe you weren't living in the right area of Denver, or maybe because you weren't a local (like I am) it was harder for you to form those friendships. I'm sure social culture is vastly different in WI.
Anyway, I totally agree w/you about the slower pace of life here. I also feel that Colo. in general is very family oriented, and so for those of us not wanting to pop out kids at 25 and live that whole family life, it can be boring here and hard to form friendships and the like.
When I was 28 I discovered that there are 3 groups: 1) singles, 2) marrieds w/no kids and 3) married w/kids. The problem I have in Denver is that we are the married w/no kids, and that is sort of the minority here. We don't mesh well w/singles and we don't mesh well with the marrieds w/kids.
I suppose the point is that we don't have forever to enjoy life. So if you aren't happy somewhere, do your best to try life elsewhere. It's not really a guarantee it'll be better elsewhere, but it sure beats just giving up and being miserable in a town you don't really belong.
Good luck to you in WI. I thought it looked like a neat place to live.
