This is very disheartening to hear.
I wouldn't go so far as to say don't try it. What do you have to lose? However, your toughest task will be having them work with you for an interview. Some firms might be willing to do phone interviews or a Skype interview. But ultimately, if you are a final candidate, you will most likely need to come in for a final interview with the higher ups. If that's something you're willing to do, I'd say go for it and try it. Like I said, you have nothing to lose but time. Just explain in your cover letter what your intentions are.

Always worth a shot I say

I have no problem with coming in for interviews at all. I could always take a sick day or a personal day without question where I work.

We've won several national championships.
I've been here 9 years, too late to catch the Av's title run. But in my first year I saw Plummer & The Broncos take a good team to the playoffs only to get crushed at home by the Steelers. In my second year I saw a miracle Rockies team sweep the NL Pennant only to go 0-4 in the World Series. Then it was multiple years of a Nuggets team with an all-star Forward and spectacular coach make playoffs runs but never make it to the NBA Finals. And then I saw what we all saw this past Sunday night

We typically have excellent teams that provide us with many great times to cheer throughout each regular season, but for some reason they've all fallen short in the final rounds. Except the Rapids
