I used to live in Thornton (144th & York). Our house backed up to a field, and it wasn't uncommon to see 5 or 6 out at our fence early in the AM. They have become pretty common-place in the metro area, and YES they will make a meal of your pet!!

I'm in HR too, and found 2 coyotes at 9am on my street. One was trotting down the sidewalk, the other in the neighbor's front yard a few houses down waiting for the other. Coyotes don't bother me, just give them a little space. Lived in Northern Arizona and had to deal with javelinas...not so fun.

Urban coyotes are a nuisance, and once they move in, they're there to say. Very hard to get rid of them. Of course here there's the argument that the coyote was there first, not that these guys are in any danger of disappearing anywhere. I've seen coyotes in downtown Memphis and Los Angeles, for crying out loud.
If you're concerned about your dog or little ones, consider adding a large sheep dog or a black mouth cur. They'll make quick work of any coyote dumb enough to cross their path. Or strangely enough, a lama or donkey. Both of them HATE coyotes. Just a little tidbit from a guy who has worked a farm or two in his days.

Yea, in thornton I saw one jogging across the street when I was coming home from school, my freind there also says that the drainage canal behind the neighborhood and the walking sidewalk path that travels the length of it is frequented by coyotes. DOn't know why we weren't visited by them grilling hot dogs and burgers at 11 pm during winter snowfall.

I live in the Highlands/Sunnyside area, right near downtown. Never seen a coyote but we do see foxes all the time.

Not a bad idea to pop them with a pellet gun from time to time. Coyotes are not an animal you want feeling comfortable around humans, particularly young, tasty humans who are too small to fend for themselves against a wild animal. Or tasty 15-pound dogs.
A little air gun/pellet gun isn't going to carry far or kill anyone, either. Including the coyote. But it makes humans a bit more like wasps...respected and best at a distance.
Our neighbors' kids got pellet guns for Christmas a few years ago and started "hunting" coyotes. It really made a difference in their behavior over time. They were a lot more skittish and not nearly so bold, staying away from the yard and scurrying away at the first sign of danger.
