Default How Does One Begin Job Search?

There is no question that we want to move to the Denver area. My husband and brother have been searching on Monster.com and Dice.com for tech jobs. Someone suggested we hire a headhunter. Does anyone have experience in doing this? Is it a good idea or not? We're looking into the Denver Tech Center as well as other businesses in Denver itself. In the meantime, I may look into school districts. I am a teacher, but would like to start off gradually in Colorado--maybe subbing first to get a feel for various schools, or possibly an aide's position. Thanks for any help, particularly for my husband and brother.

hey there- Did your husband and brother post their resumes on the those websites? You don't hire headhunters, they get paid by the employers. SO, I would encourage you to have them post their resumes on there (if they haven't already) and normally the headhunters contact you. bashep

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I kind of thought my friend's suggestion at hiring a headhunter seemed a bit odd--but then again I don't work in the business world. They have both posted their resumes on various sites, including Monster. So I guess we just need patience. Also, I assume being out-of-state may be a disadvantage when it comes to the job hunt. But moving there without the job would be risky and scary!

Never "hire" a headhunter, they work on behalf of the employer. Also, I would suggest trying to get a "local" address (a friend or something) a lot of employers will automatically discard a "non local" resume if they are competing with a local candidate.

You also may want to check out some niche associations or job boards. If your husband is in IT, the Rocky Mountain User Groups is a great IT job board. IT is a yahoo group, you'll just have to do a serach for it and sign up.

Thanks. We have relatives in Aurora. It seems dishonest to use an address other than our own, but I understand your point. If an employer responds, how or when do we disclose the fact that we're actually not in Colorado yet? And what about phone numbers? Won't it be obvious that it's not local?

Yes, both are in IT. I appreciate the Rocky Mountain User Groups info.

I applied for a job in Denver while living in Dallas that was posted on the company's website. After one phone interview and two flights to Denver (at my expense) the company made an offer I found satsifactory. Some companies may be closed minded but others open if you have the skills set they are looking for.

Keep in mind that you cannot apply for Colorado government jobs or schools if you are not a Colorado resident. In this state you must be a resident first, kind of a tricky problem. There were some jobs I was interested in but it was clearly listed that non-residents cannot apply (it is the law in this state). Guess you could always move here first...

Thanks. I obtained info for myself from the Colorado Department of Education, and didn't realize I must first be a resident. I have noticed that several job positions within IT (my husband) will state "local residents only". However, your post is encouraging in that you were hired from out-of-state. We shall see. . . If we could move first we would, but it's a bit frightening. If we were single, that would be one thing. But the fact that we have young kids to support makes it all the more risky. Maybe my husband should move out there, rent an apartment, find the job, then we follow. It would kind of stink in many ways, but possibly would be worth it.

how long do you need to live in Colorado to be considered a resident for things like govt hiring? Is there a set length of time?
