Vegaspilgrim- I don't need the hike to be a ten min. drive away. Never said anything about that. I just don't want a 2 hr drive, or even an hour drive after work. 10 minutes is pretty unrealistic and I understand that. I did research the area, aside from using google earth and maping various locations, so I'm pretty clear that the rockies are west, but thanks for the clairification.

Scott5280- Thanks for the rec's, that's what I'm looking for. I'll have to google those spots and check them out.

I work in Golden-for now-bad economy, and live near down town-Park Hill and I agree there are tons of great walking neighborhoods. I love my area and walk outside down 17th ave and 6th ave a lot. I like it, but also want something a little more challenging.

Golden? Then I don't really see what the issue is? There are tons of hiking trails within 5-10 minutes of Golden-- Lookout Mountain park, Jeffco open space in Golden Gate Canyon, GGCSP, hiking right at the first hogback where I-70 meets C-470 (don't know the exact name). Downtown to Golden via 6th Ave freeway is about 15-25 minutes, depending on traffic.

A great day hike depends on what time your day starts and ends.

I like Waterton Canyon.
