This website is helpful:
Colorado School Performance Maps
The two most referenced districts here(in what I've seen) are Cherry Creek and Douglas County. I'm not current on housing rentals in the area, but I imagine you may find something like that in part of the Cherry Creek district(perhaps in SE Aurora) and most likely in Highlands Ranch or Parker(both Douglas County district). Jefferson County and Littleton districts also have some nice schools and may have housing in your range.

The website bh refers to is an excellent resource. Also be sure to check the schools you are interested in websites. They will have info regarding test scores/AYP ratings etc. We moved here from another state---I used these resources to determine where to move to. The schools my kids were attending previously were not meeting standards and I wanted to live based on where I wanted my kids to go to school.

That's the key question. Denver overall has a good educational system. If you live close to one that is considered "better", then you can go from there. I wouldn't, however, live out in my neighborhood (SE Aurora) to put your kids in the Cherry Creek School District if that means you are commuting for an hour each way.

There are very few districts that I would stay away from. Even the not so great districts like Denver and Aurora have good schools. Don't read too much into standardized test results.

fortunately, for now...work is not an issue. I am a full time student and will have support from my ex that will cover living expenses. i wont be looking for a 'real' job til next fall. i will work locally doign something parttime just to get out of the house for now. so, the school is the number one thing.
Its good to hear that the majority of schools in the Denver area are decent.
I appreciate everyone's input.
thank you

There are a few homes for rent in my neighborhood, though I'm not sure what they charge. We are in Saddle Rock Ridge, which is in SE Aurora. Technically, the neighborhood is considered to be in an unincorporated area of Aurora. Everything surrounding us is considered to be in the city of Centennial. It's in the Cherry Creek School District (one of the best). Your kids would go to Eaglecrest High School and Thunder Ridge Middle School. We are having a snowstorm right now and the rain is coming down like ice pellets, but when it's over, if you'd like me to write down some info off the "for rent" signs, I can do that and send them to you. Our neighborhood is very nice...not too upscale...right in the middle. It's not, however, convenient to downtown. I do go downtown once a month, but it would be horrid to commute. Aurora is on the far East end of the city. We joke that once you pass through, the next stop is Kansas! If you'd like to google the area, you can look it up. It's in zip code 80015 (but that is a large zip code, so technically it's closer to 80016). It's right off the E-470 and Smoky Hill Road. There is a great mall called Southlands less than 2 miles away.
If you have any questions, you can send me a message. I think you and your family would enjoy it here. The homes are pretty nice and since you are renting, you don't have to worry about home prices.

It is nice..
I agree 3D's I think Saddle Rock Ridge is a great family oriented neighborhood with great schools. While I am more of a city guy these days, I did on site sales with a luxury home builder along the golf club about ten years ago- actually it's called The Falls..I loved the amazing views, the century old cotton woods, and some of the natural wetlands. At first I was like "oh brother I have to drive out to some bland suburb every day," but right away I started to like it out there...Feels very open, and "yes" there are some pretty good ammenities..That is still one of the areas I personally recommend to friends who are considering the south east suburbs..offers lower priced stuff to higher end luxury homes..very safe. They have a fair trail syetem for walking, biking too.
