Same question here, but am focusing on accelerated programs. Have two sons, both highly intelligent, the oldest has been in the accelerated program and, going into third grade this year, is starting 5th grade math. To move him to another school where they are at the third grade level would be a major step backwards for him. Are there any schools that offer this?

Also, the youngest is going into kindergarten and has been reading for some time now. I want to find a school that challenges students who show ability, not ignores them because someone else needs more help to catch up.

Your best bet is to contact the school districts and/or schools directly to find out. The traditional schools themselves are in recess for a week or so, before the staff returns. I believe there's an age cutoff to attend 1st grade. Kindergarten is not required. If they are not flexible, consider sending the kids to private school, they do anything when you throw money at them.

Every area has both good and bad schools -- and they change year over year given parent participation.

Overall Cherry Creek has always been highly rated.

Overall DPS has generally been poorly rated -- but there are exceptions and these sadly follow economic (as well as social) lines. Without getting into a school by school DPS breakdown, Stapleton and Park Hill both have fantastic ratings for grade school -- and one would imagine soon to come middle and high school given the expansions.

I leave the reasons why unstated, but ....

SlightlyAskew: Take a look at this thread.

"Best Schools" in Denver area

You would need to talk to the admin at the specific schools where you are considering enrolling your son. I know that in Boulder Valley, many accomodatons are made for gifted students, such as accelerating them in one area, such as math, actually, especially in math. I do not know the policies in other districts.

We are moving to Denver Co sometime next year. I don't want to be in the "city" of Denver - somehwere north or south (out skirts) about a 30 minute commute into town. Please help us make a wise choice, in where we should raise a family and buy a home. My youngest is in middle school. I would like to be in a small quaint town. If at all possible, curfews and low crime rate. I am from a small town, and will like to keep it that way, if I can. Any suggestions, will be greatly recieved. Thank you. Kim

Kim, there are no small quaint towns that close to city-center. Easily an hour. Curfews are unheard of here. Not much crime in most suburbs. Most suburban schools in the area are very good to excellent. If you know where the job is, let us know, it will help with suggestions.
