Cinco de Mayo Festival, Denver, 2009 -- PHOTO TOUR
Cinco de Mayo, is celebrated by Mexicans and non-Mexican as a commemoration of the victory of a heroic people and their struggle for freedom. On May 5, 1862, in the town of Puebla, the outnumbered Mexican army defeated French forces providing the momentum and national confidence to drive foreign power from their country. Though Denver is not Mexico, half of Colorado was at one time, hence the people and culture are here in the west and southwest.
This was the 22nd Annual Cinco de Mayo Festival held in Civic Center Park, it use to be just cruising popular boulevards and shutting down a few streets in the hoods. This change keeps the event centrally located and safer with crowd and traffic issues. This is the largest Cinco de Mayo celebration in the United States and offers arts and crafts, strolling Mariachi bands, and colorfully costumed Aztec dancers. There are 350 booths featuring Mexican cuisine and outdoor-grill specialties. Three stages feature music continuously with authentic nortena, salsa and band music, folklorico dancers, along with carnival rides and a midway.
The Aztec dancers were inside at a separate time, but I added their photos throughout the thread.

Aztec, you rock!
The two cops gave me a heart attack.
The taller, goggled one can arrest me any time I'm guilty and am willing to turn myself in for interrogation and waterboarding.

I have not seen one on CityData, hence why I toss events out that I go to, or try to go to. Next up is the People's Fair and Juneteeth in Five Points. However, you have a good idea for a sticky thread!

So true Suzco! Most who make those comments either don't live in Denver or don't attend the festivals and celebrations. It is what you make of it here and I make the most of it.

Were tight pants a requirement? Ha, ha! Great photos, and yes, absolutely great to know that we're not moving to a "white" cowtown, although coming from New York City is going to be hard to beat. See you soon!
