Snow tires don't hurt....especially if you have a higher powered rear wheel drive car. For most cars a good set of all season tires and some conservative driving will fine.

I survived my first winter here with no snow tires. Definitely watch your speed, and give plenty of distance for stopping. I have front wheel drive and the hardest part would be turns where your rear may fishtail a bit if you go too fast.

Outside the mountains such as Denver, Junction, etc., you don't need them.

However if you spend time in the mountains, not only do you need snow tires but you'll need chains.

Now, any city in Colorado, especially along the Front Range, gets heavy snowstorms a few times in the winter, where like 2 feet will fall in a couple of days. During these times, if you want to drive, then I would recommend snow tires/chains with four wheel drive. Otherwise, you're better off walking.

It's front wheel drive. You'll be fine. That "2 feet of snow" actually is very occasional - every 3-5 years lately in Denver, certainly not often several times per year. Most snow melts fairly quickly and the roads are generally (not always) clear fairly soon. Frankly, much better than say Chicago or Minneapolis. That said, if you have no experience driving in the snow, I would certainly make the effort to look for a lesson.

Pardon my confusion, are you saying that the snow tires kept you going or even they proved that it was hard to stop?

I have a Ford Focus with multi season tires. I got in 26 days at Copper/Winter Park. It was always packed snow. The car did fine. If I had snow tires I could have gone faster but honestly snow tires and wheels are not worth the expense.

Maybe when I have more disposable income I will get them. But not now.

I have winter tires (Blizzaks) on the wife's TrailBlazer (4x4) and winter tires on my Magnum (AWD). Why? Because the $400 is worth driving 3 winters on tires that can stop much quicker than All Season tires. I have dedicated wheels so I don't have to pay to mount/unmount them each year. We do live at 8500' and drive through the mountains for work, so this is another big factor.

Just watch these videos if you don't think they are worth protecting your life and your car!
