It's not. Because it is 18% minority it leans to the left. But outside of the really urbanized area around Colfax Aurora is very conservative like most of the 'burbs. I don't know why people have this obsession with hating Aurora. I'm most of a south/west suburban kind of guy but Aurora is a fine, growing, vibrant place too.

Right, my point exactly-- Aurora is politically like many other areas. Politically it is very similar to Denver and Lakewood. Both Denver and Lakewood have very liberal areas (generally in older, more urbanized neighborhoods) and more conservative areas (generally newer, more suburban neighborhoods). Aurora is exactly the same-- it has very liberal areas (especially in older parts of town) and very conservative areas (especially the newer developments). So with all due respect, I think my initial remark is accurate.

I don't know if you were referring to me when I asked the nature of the "Saudi Aurora" title... if so, I wasn't suggesting anything, simply wanted to know what the title meant because I have never heard of it.

I totally didnt mean that you suggested it was racially motivated Momma, and I do apologize if thats howe I came off. But to answer you question, the fact that "Southeast Aurora" used to be in the middle of nowhere is why we called it Saudi Aurora..

Aloha,
Michelle

Why don't we pick on somebody new for a change?-- like, say commerce city? I am sick of hearing trash talk about Aurora on these posts from people who don't even live there, whose views on what Aurora is ("Saudi" Aurora, etc) are 20+ years out of date. Get it through your heads, people-- Aurora is a giant, mega-suburb-- similar to what Mesa, AZ is to Phoenix. It has good and bad, there is no way you can generalize. For the umpteenth time, all of Aurora east of Parker road and south of Hampden Ave-- which is where most of the new development is taking place-- is in the Cherry Creek School District, not Aurora Public Schools. Cherry Creek Schools are consistently rated as one of the best school districts in the country. Southeast Aurora is solid middle to upper-middle class, family friendly territory. Go to the Southlands outdoor mall some time, and see all the families there, if you don't believe me. Sheesh!

And for everybody that keeps harping about how "far out" it is-- look at a map for a change, instead of making stuff up. "Far out," by Fargo, North Dakota standards... sure. By contemporary Metro Denver standards, no. Most people who live there don't work downtown, but rather, in the Tech Center or the south I-25 corridor. 20-30 minute commute, max-- and that's by taking Smoky Hill, Arapahoe, or Parker Road. If you're willing to take E-470, you could make that a 15 minute commute to the tech center. You want to talk far out... look at Elizabeth, Franktown, Kiowa.

No kidding Pilgrim. I lived in "Saudi Aurora" for 30 years (up until 2002) and it wasn't until I went out to my best friend who lived out in Elizabeth did I stop thinking we were the "sticks". Basically, her directions were "go down Smoky Hill Rd 'til it ends and turn left". They were 20 somethings back then, and they only lastedout there for a couple of months. My friend was sick of lookin at the tumbleweeds. As far as Saudi Aurora goes, I go back for a visit in 4 days and I am jumping out of my skin to get off this foresaken rock!! I got nothin but love for my old stompin grounds. I know right before I left, they had just built the Kings Soopers at Tower & Hampden...I can't imagine what the area looks like now. I left in the middle of them working on 225 and Parker...heard it looks totally different now...I hope I don't get lost!

Aloha to CO Mom In Paradise....hope you have a great visit.

I'm tired of seeing Aurora beat to death here so this thread is closed. We now have a good understanding of whatever the issues might have been. Every city or region has some parts that are nicer than others, worse than others and there seems no reason to keep rehashing the same old stuff.

To recap, Aurora is a city in its own right, is fairly large at about 150 square miles in area, has some older areas that some consider below standard, has many newer areas that some consider to be as good as anywhere else.

Finis.
