We're #1 in Children's Hospital Category!!
I decided to get off CD and look at my homepage, and now I'm back with some good news about health care in Denver.
Best Children's Hospitals Honor Roll - MSN Health & Fitness - Kids' Health
A small number of children's hospitals—10 out of the 160 surveyed and 98 that responded—were ranked in all 10 specialties. This unusually capable group, listed alphabetically below, constitutes the Honor Roll. It is the first appearance of a pediatric counterpart to the Honor Roll in the Best Hospitals rankings.
Children's Hospital (Denver)
Children's Hospital Boston
Children's Hospital Los Angeles
Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
Children's Medical Center (Dallas)
Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center
Johns Hopkins Children's Center (Baltimore)
New York-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital
St. Louis Children's Hospital-Washington University
Texas Children's Hospital (Houston)

I think this is data from US News and World Report? Also on top for the 11th year in a row for treating Respiratory disorders: National Jewish Health in Denver, beating out the Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins, Mass General, and Cleveland Clinic. That's pretty good company there.

Yes, it's from US News and World Report. I found it on the MSN home page. I am especially interested in Children's Hospitals since I work in pediatrics. That's good news about Nat. Jewish, too.

Um, we weren't ranked #1 (see what I boldfaced in the quote)
Also, US News and World Reports rankings are crap.
That said, we have a wonderful Children's Hospital. I'm friends with 2 doctors there, and my cousin did her pediatric residency there.

I've long said that there is no #1. I did read the link before I posted, but I missed the alphabetical order part. Nevertheless, to be considered one of the top 10 children's hospitals is fantastic!

Agreed! Even if it's not ranked as number one, it's still wonderful that it's ranked in the top 10.

Out of curiosity, how do they rank things like this? Do they go on statistics, reputation, word-of-mouth, combination?

It's based on the input of pediatric specialists across the country; essentially all the physicians that practice at the best pediatric hospitals in the nation weigh in. Some of it is reputational in nature and some of it is based on the funding you receive (hence, this is why you will always see Boston and Philadelphia in this list and in any other -- they receive at least 5 times the NIH funding as anything other pediatric hospital.) It's based on who is leading research in various areas and who is finding cures, essentially. The rest is based on outcomes, of course.
I know this because I work at Children's, in a nonclinical position and have actually spent some time with the survey; it is incredibily detailed.
We are honored to have been a top 10 children's hospital for the last 7 years. And being a mother myself I would not take my child ANYwhere else, be it a higher acuity issue (cancer, heart , etc.) or a broken bone or stitches.
