Default Walkability Scores

After 5280milehiguy posted www.walkscore.com, I thought it would be neat to compare walkability scores. I know the program isn't perfect, but I was impressed in how much stuff it actually lists. I was playing around and changing the location one block can change the score by up to 5 points.

So without posting your address or too much information, what's your neighborhood and what's your walkability score?

My current neighborhood is in Brooklyn, NY is 98 out of 100. We're moving to Denver in a few weeks and it's going to be very odd to own a car, let alone have to drive around on a regular basis!

I looked up where I lived previously:
Indianapolis= 52 somewhat walkable
Nashville=23 car dependent

Now I'm in Unincorporated Jeffco which scored 58=somewhat walkable. Although between walking, biking and public transportation--i think the number should be higher

I read the algorithm and it only gives points for places closer than 1 mile with maximum points given if closer than 0.25 miles. So it only takes into account the closest place in each of the categories. So if you live within 0.5 miles of 3 grocery stores than you would get less points from the grocery category than if you lives within 0.25 miles of a gas station (which counts as a grocery store). Anyways, it specifically notes that it doesn't account for public transit in it's algorithm. A fun little toy to play around with nevertheless.

I cant see why where I live scored only 92 out of 100. I am 3 blocks from 16th street mall in uptown.

I guess if I lived near a strip mall I'd have a high score according to the website?

Yes, there are no gas stations in denver CBD nor most any other major cities. So why would a gas station make an area more walkable?

Haha I love it! According to this website Walmart's address on West colfax in Lakewood scores a 75! Its very walkable! Yes, of course because it is in a strip mall!

It seems to leave out a lot of things close by. There were quite a few restaurants (one's that have been in business for a long time) within a quarter mile that didn't make the cut for unknown reasons. Even though it's not 100% accurate I think it's a nice tool and gives a pretty good general idea of an area's walk ability.

I have to agree about gas stations...they should modify the algorithm a bit. They are gas stations after all, and the site is a measure of walkability.

My neighborhood is "very walkable", but I'm quite surprised they don't at least take into account transit stops or stations. Wouldn't think that would be that difficult to account for. Having a station within a half mile of apartment makes all the difference in the world for me. Would probably increase the score quite a bit, but then maybe it would seem competitive with cities that are in fact more walkable.
