There is a market in Lodo and one off glenarm where you can get groceries. This may be a new concept to subruban folks because they arent big box but it works in NYC.

Are there many smaller markets in the Denver area? Any chains like Fresh & Easy? Reasonably priced independent markets maybe?

I cant speak for much outside the downtown area but cooks fresh choice of 16th and glenarm is good. The selection looks very fresh and they even have a nice deli. Cost? A bit more than King soopers or safeway.

I would suggest Applewood. This is the area where Wheat Ridge, Lakewood, and Golden meet on Youngfield centering on 32th-38th and Youngfield. I have written much on this area--so do a search and google the area.

The homes will certainly meet your criteria. It has upscale older and newer homes that are not cookie-cutter with good amenities, parks, shopping, hospital, transit nearby. It is considered one of the hidden gems that is known to long-term residence. Also, it will be very close to your work.

Merczyks fits the bill. New Lodo location soon (or there?). The place was fantastic 5 or so years ago .. their meat is now so-so in comparison and the shop has seen some staff rollover which took it from fantastic to .. eh.

Vitamin Cottage is at 15th & Platte in the Central Platte Valley. Despite the name, they offer a sizable collection of organic groceries in addition to vitamins. It's a bit of a hike from the Central Business District but quite doable from LoDo (about 10 minutes walk from union station or so).
