Default bikes on buses

I'm interested in taking my bike out to golden or boulder for a ride, but i'm concerned that my nice bike will get chewed up by gravel and dirt on the front of the bus. the racks look pretty exposed, should i be worried about this?

I never heard anybody complain about gravel problems with the front storage of bikes. Many bicyclist are hard core mountain bike trail riders and that would put more wear and tear on a bike.

The bus from Denver to Boulder is a regional bus, Route B/BX. You can store the bike in the cargo area, under the bus. These buses are similar to Greyhound buses.

The bus to Golden from Denver is a regular bus with just a front carrier. However, the bus from Boulder to Golden on Hwy. 93, Route GS, is a regional bus, again with under the bus storage.

Back when RTD started putting racks on the front of buses I was taking the Boulder Express daily with my bike, I recall having some probolems on more than one occassion with a driver who claimed I would have to take the local because it had racks and the under seat storage was no longer for bikes.

I have not taken that route in years and maybe it no longer happens but if you run into any problems ask the driver to call his supervisor and confirm after you offer to handle the loading and unloading yourself.

thanks, I will give that a try. I've got my crappy old bike I use for commuting, but i am a bit protective of my road bike and would like to avoid any bus related mishaps.

I've never taken a bike on a regional route, and from Denver to Boulder only regional buses cover those. I don't know the updated policy on the underneath luggage storage bins. As far as Golden goes, you could perhaps take a 16L or a 32 or 44. Those routes run buses that have the standard front-end bike racks.
