Car insurance rates vs. CA
For anyone who moved from Orange County to Denver's suburbs, what happened to your car insurance rates? Up, down, same? I've got two cars, two drivers, full coverage, good records.

I think you need to call a local insurance guy - or go online and use a local zip - for a quote...

We got more coverage, and the monthly premium dropped about $100/mo, when we moved from Kern County to Arapahoe County.

I moved from Santa Monica to Denver 6 years ago and my rates went UP! I couldn't believe it. It seems Colorado required medical coverage on every policy even if you didn't want it. Good news is, that got voted away so now I would guess you're rates will be close to or slightly lower than they were in Cali. When you get a quote, you have to specify that you DO NOT want medical coverage or they'll still add it in anyway but it's no longer mandatory.

Colorado: DORA : Agency Name
Methinks you might be incorrect. My agent called me at the beginning of the year to inform me that my rates were going up a teeny bit because of the new law linked above.

I have moved several times between OC. and Denver/Boulder..without a doubt my auto insurance has ALWAYS been higher in Colorado. There was some deregulation through some state legislative actions a few years ago as posters above have alluded to, but I think these were actions aimed at strictly comp. minimums. Correct me if I am wrong fellow insurance gurus. Just a word to the wise .."get Colorado plates quick"; most people (Colorado natives) like myself couldn't care less about where your from (welcome to colorado) ,but there are quite a few California Haters in the metro..not so much Boulder or mountains though. I have driven with California plates before here, and had some fairly negative encounters; even more ridiculous is that I am from here, and from a five generation Colorado pioneer family. I never get yelled at in California..things like "go back to Colorado *******..when they see my green mountain plates.

I had CA plates on one of my vehicles for about 10 months after moving to Colorado. It didn't get me pulled over, but I got pulled over once for speeding (when I wasn't), and the cop was dumbfounded as to why I had a CO license and CA plates. The truth was, I couldn't afford to register that vehicle at the time. She let me off, for the speeding (she had her speed limit wrong) and the out-of state plates with a warning. Other than that, I received no ill-will due to my CA plates.
Now, driving around WA with CO plates is a different story. I got pulled over for "speeding" in Pullman, WA because I had out-of-state plates. No ticket there either, just the run-around reserved for out-of staters. Otherwise, my CO plates had been nothing more than a conversation starter.

The mandatory medical that I mentioned is one of the reasons why Colorado insurance was so expensive when I moved here. That was struck down about a year ago, but then insurance companies lobbied to add it back (read "sneak it back") and then customers would have the option of deleting it again. In other words, you're bill goes back up for something you don't want and you have to call them and sign a release saying you don't want it. Basically, it's a scam. Once I deleted it, my insurance was less than in California but not a lot less...I would guess maybe $20-30 less/month.

I kept the same levels of coverage and my insurance premium went UP by like $400 per year when i moved from Redondo Beach (90278) to Denver (80246). I've since moved to 80231 AND turned 25 and haven't seen much of a change. It seems like, overall, insurance is just more expensive here. For me, at least. I've never filed a claim and my driving record is fine.

Those are both really urban areas though. I know OC insurance is usually less than LA because LA is, well, LA. I'm guessing Denver proper and the more urban parts of Aurora have higher rates than suburbs 10 miles farther out.
